What are you using to create the kick sound? Some VSTs I've use previously have some weird noises on samples, if it's a free plug-in it might be the cause. Have you tried isolating the frequency and cutting it out?

The kick is a sample. It played fine for about an hour then about an hour into the project its starts doing this.
Its happened before and the project was ruined.
I removed all plugins on the channel and same thing.
It sounds like the sample rate of just that channel is dropping to like 8 bits.
I dropped in the same audio sample to a new track... same thing...
So weird.
This isssue and my auto color issue resetting randomly are driving me mad.

I have a hunch it has to do with sample conversions & interpolation. Let me ask you, is the kick sample rate the same as the project? I'll admit, that noise in the kick is extreme, but I've noticed similar effects, albeit way lower, when there was sample mismatching. It has something to do with interpolating. There's a setting for that somewhere, and I remember playing around with it to get different results. I'll see if I can find it.

Ok, try and fool around with these settings here:
File > Project settings > Playback resample mode & Render resample mode
Other than that, I'm all out of ideas.

Awesome thanks I will try that and check to see if the sample rate is mismatched.
It definitely sounds like a sample rate issue.
Strange that it would work at first though then distort halfway through.

Yea, that's the mystery. Let me know if the playback setting affects the kick. I'm curious about this now.

Ok good call on the playback and resample mode.
I changed them both from default to FAST. Either of those algorithms worked.
I'll have to read up on this a bit more. Thanks though!

Same problem not fixed
Bump. I am having the same problem only on my kick drum. It was fine for hours while I mixed most of the track then suddenly the sound phased out on that one instrument. I have tried changing sample and playback rates. I have also tried new samples but the same thing happens. Does anyone have a clue what this could be? Pulling my hair out.....

Drove me nuts too. I tried fiddling with the sample rate and bit rate.. didn't do much to fix the issue...
But changing playback and resample mode did... try different settings in there...
What a strange problem...
It changed the sound of my project a bit but at least its usable..
Anybody have a recommended setting for this?
Converting all my samples is not even an option.

i cant help here, sorry
just wanna tell that i never had any issues like this since i use Reaper ( v0.86 or so?)
i mix many different samplerates on the fly, i dont use sample player VSTi (not for drums at least), i just put the samples on the Timeline.
the setting i always use:

i also removed the playrate slider from the GUI.

Same problem
Maybe this will help. My vocals are also distorted and when I render file to see if it was just only playback in reaper that was distorted it rendered the file in even worse quality. All other files not used in reaper play normally through my sound card.

I think this only started happening to me a few versions ago as well as with my auto color issue.. I wonder what happened?!

Are you playing the master output too loud, meter in to red?

Please zip/rar & upload the .RPP (no audio attached),
and remove any midi tracks that you do not wish
to share publicly (just isolate the issue).
It's probably not the sample rate conversion issue,
because if you say you changed the algorithm to
'fast', the project would sound way worse if conversion
was taking place.

Working around it for now
I no longer have that sample in my RPP but thanks so much for the willingness to help. I have programmed a midi kick in my session and reaper is handling that fine. Just had to find a work around. I will probably start producing my instrumentals in Reaper. I suspect is has something to do with the way my tracks were rendered in another program before bringing them into reaper. I am performing the song tonight and am pleased with the results after finding a new kick sound in my project!!!

I'm trying to save the project as a new name so I don't mess with the original and I get the error message... error creating project file... project not saved...
