Default When only a part of item is showing, have Open In Editor open the whole file?

***** EDIT - This isn't happening anymore :-s, so think I was doing something weird, dunno, the items weren't glued thats for sure *****
***** But 'ill leave my post below anyway, perhaps someone will know why it was happening? *****

I have a sample that ive shortened both ends so im only using part of it but can still extend out either end if needed/the rest of the file is still there but when i do anything that involves just the section showing, such as opening a copy in the editor (RX) only that part opens in it rather than the whole file so i'm having to copy that section to a new track, extend out both ends, then open in RX and do what i intended to do (have RX "Learn" the section of noise I want to remove then remove it as I would do and then in REAPER "Overwrite original file") and then having to shrink the file back down to just the section i wanted and move back to the orriginal track which is a very long convoluted way of doing it :-(

What id like to do is, right click sample(when REAPER is showing just a section of it), open copy in RX giving me the whole sample rather than just that section.

Im sure theres an option somewhere that i can't find heheh

open items in external editor opens the entire source file
open copy makes a new file in new take (truncated ends) then opens that in the external editor.

you get used to it.

I was working on a documentary early this year and used the function a lot.

The source files were long interviews and only a minute here and there are used in the film. If I opened the full interview in RX it would take me a long time to find the section that needed editing. Opening a copy of just the used area worked so much better. Sometimes I would have to glue first if there were splits in that section.

You could also drag the items down to a new track, extend the edges for handles, then send that to the editor as a copy. After replacing just trim and bring it back into the original position.

Yeah i'd just glue if it was all i wanted, simple keys stroke and doing what you said second is what i am doing, which adds time.

Having it always open the full file in RX and if i only want the section im working on to open, just glueing it first seems like a better system to me *shrugs*, or perhaps a second option in the right click menu to "Copy Glued Section and Open in Editor" perhaps? :-)

I'd like if the whole item opened but the area was marked somehow.
