recording
I do this each week. My son has radio prog in Australia, broadcast on net. I use a prog called totalrecorder - recommended by Art Evans, no less. It's fairly simple to work however I discoverd that you must first set total recorde to record then press play on your streaming app - I generally use winamp but it works with others.
http://www.totalrecorder.com/
Good luck and perhaps we could all tune in.
Cheers, Roger

I think it depends on the audio hardware you use and the capability of the driver application. I use an Audiophile 24/96, and using a combination of internal driver mixer routing and routing in Reaper, I can record anything coming out of my PC right in Reaper. I don't know if it's something you can do with just any and all audio hardware thought.

I'd expect Total Recorder to be 'clean', if only because it's so widely recommended.

Can't you just use Winamp and the Disk Writer plugin as output?
Also, there's an option in the MP3 plugin that can save streams to disk.

Shameless further plug for Total Recorder, an app in which I have no financial interest other than having had free upgrades for years - that being the terms of the licence I bought - anyway, after a long period during which I didn't seem to be able to get anything out of the Total Recorder website, it's back with a new (April) version - which I'm now using without any further payment again.
It really does have a very handy feature set which I've never found in any other single recording app.

Plainest interface since Reaper 0.01 but one that works!

There have been many posts on this forum and indeed there are many videos on YouTube about recording or capturing 'what you here' from streaming radio stations or even videos.
The simpelist way is to set your sound card to 'Stereo Mix' and use your favorite recording software.
I tried today and came accross two stubling blocks.
1. My firewire card has no 'Stereo Mix' setting so I used the Laptop's own Sigmatel. It sounded really thin 'till I discovered the switch to 'turn off PC speaker' Only then was the sound full range.
2. I thought this would be digital but its obviously not as when the radio is on pause the meters in Reaper show -53db which is on a paar with a poor old cassette!
So no way is this capturing the streaming but re-recording the analog output.
Hmm - no good is it?
Who knows how to really capture the stream ?
Cheers

Ok - I posted a little too early there.
The answer to my own question is; one needs a 'Virtual Sound Card'
Several firms offer such software - TotalRecorder does too.
Thats the only way around the re-recording bit.
Shame Reaper doesn't have a Vitual Sound Card - lol

Yeah... that's the LOUSY self-noise of the SigmaTel / laptop. I have one of those in my little laptop. Noisy little turd... almost useless.
I suppose you Googled about? There is bound to a freeware utility to do this...

This is an interesting topic. Finding a free virtual sound card is not easy. Maybe the trial version of this will work: http://www.ntonyx.com/vac.htm

Simplest way: Enable your crap onboard sound device, set Reaper to use your device in Waveout or DirectSound mode, run
sndvol32 /r
select Stereo Mix, adjust volume settings and set up Reaper to record from that input.

But won't that record the analog from your sound card?
maa, rig expert is for interfacing your shortwave radio to your PC.

Yes, but I don't think it does what we're looking for. I'm afraid to try it anyway because it seems to be RigExpert Specific:
Quote:
Using this driver, the RigExpert device becomes a standard sound
card, making possible operating digital modes with any sound card
software. It also provides an emulated serial ports for CAT
(Computer Aided Transceiver) control.
DRIVER INSTALLATION
Before installing this driver, please install the Rigexpert
Virtual Communication Port drivers (see the RigExpert manual).
|
It might still work mind you, but my machine is already too full of junk to try it. Maybe I'll try those virtual cables.
<edit> No, I won't.

Demo version limitations:
Supports a single cable only
After three minutes of audio transfer, the sound became noisy

Will work for the odd thing I dare say but not for youtube or Last.fm as they use the WDM driver.

I just found this thread cos I'd also like to use Reaper to record streaming audio from the web, eg, form You Tube or Pandora.
According to Nicholas' Reaper 3 USer Guide (p89) this should be possible, but I haven't been able to get it to work.
I have my on board sound card (a Delta-66) disabled, and would like to keep it that way. I don't mind changing it's settings, though. I run Reaper under ASIO. I changed it to Direct Sound (Nicholas suggested that might be necessary) and tried various Input and Output settings, but no luck.
I can see the streaming audio in the meters of two channels of my sound card's control panel (and I can hear it) but I can't get it into Reaper.
I have sndvol32 disabled as well... at least I think I do... not sure how it interacts with the Delta. Could that be the problem?

You're right. So if you can't play in a media player, you could try Virtual Audio Cable... a license is almost as expensive as a Reaper license, but they offer an evaluation.
http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.html
I've used it and was able to record from websites and players that didn't support asio.
EDIT: Saw that VAC was already suggested. Sorry for the double

As long as you're happy with 'RECORDING' from the web - see post 16 above.
Most other posts in this thread are about capturing the stream directly rather than recording what the soundcard made of it.

Right - I've installed RigExpert and windows accepts it as a wave device.
It wont pass the sound on to its output though so I'm stuck again....

Right, I'd rather capture the stream than record the output. But could settle for the latter, but I haven't been able to get even that to work. I'll play around some more with sndvol32 /r. But I'd much rather get the digital direct.
Thanks!

OK, how about this one:
http://www.milosoftware.com/en/index...soundleech.php
Quote:
Sound Leech is an application that captures sound from other programs. Contrary to most solutions which involve emulation drivers, SoundLeech runs as a simple application and captures sound from the applications themselves, rather than "what you hear".
With SoundLeech, you can finally obtain a digital copy of streaming audio...

Yeah looks like they've got somthing there too but like another one I found it needs NET Framework which I refuse just like I refuse any toolbars.
I found you can grab the streams from LastFM with the firefox downloadhelper today.....

I put off getting .Net as long as I could but eventually there were so many apps I needed that required it that it became unavoidable. I think it's like Java in that respect, it's almost ubiquitous nowadays. I don't like Java apps either but sometimes there's no alternative.

This works perfectly for me, but it can be a little finicky to get it set up. Here's (I think) the surest way to get into the settings, using generic internal soundcard (use your onboard integrated soundcard, not a professional or other dedicated audio interface).
In Reaper: create a project. In options>Preferences>Audio>Device select "Direct Sound" and "Primary sound capture driver" to select your onboard default audio card. Create a track and arm for recording.
Next, and this is a little finicky, open up your regular windows control panel audio mixer. Try Start Menu>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices. Then click the "Audio" tab, and under "Sound Recording" click "Volume" and then click Options>Properties>Recording and check the box for "stereo mix" or "What you hear" (as opposed to selecting mic or line input). This is usually turned off by default-- usually the only options selected are to record mic in and line in, but support for it is included in basic direct sound drivers.
Most cheapie built-in soundcards have an option for this, but you might have to hunt around a bit for it, and you might need to adjust Windows' crude sound mixer to get acceptable results. The basic idea is just that you set the soundcard to record the overall mix or "what you hear" instead of recording the more conventional inputs. This is a standard part of generic DirectSound support, which is the most basic and generic windows sound driver set.
You'll want to turn it off afterwards to avoid feedback when using normal windows sound schemes.
Note that Vista might have disabled this as part of the new MS schemes of protecting you from infringing your own copyrights, but I think that only applies to "HD" stuff, whatever that means.
Otherwise, the generic ability to simply record the internal audio of the computer is basically built into the windows sound drivers, and you can capture any sounds that you can play on your computer using nothing other than the generic windows sound drivers. Just set the soundcard to record the whole computer mix and you're set.
Hope that helps.

Nice help there Yep - the short form was in post 16 already.
You are recording the analog output of your card - thats maybe what you want but with a shitty onboard soundcard its hardly satisfying to me.
What bothers me is if its so simple for a media player to grab the stream and play it why is it so difficult to capture that stream at the same time?
At least for stations like Last.fm
Anyway before the whole thread repeats itself, please read it from the top.
Cheers

I saw that, but it seemed like some people were still having trouble getting it to work at all (e.g. Marah Mag).
If you need higher quality than, for example, just learning cover songs or something, a vastly under-utilized option is to simply run a balanced cable from the output to the input of a decent-quality audio interface, which I presume anyone who needs and cares about audio quality has to have already.
Even something like a Presonus or M-Audio USB soundcard is vastly more capable of high-quality IO than digital samplers that have been used on countless hit records and movie soundtracks. Try it. I bet you can't hear the difference. Especially with streaming internet audio.
Might save yourself from complicated and costly software solutions. Or don't, as you see fit.
Cheers.
