So, Repaer has no instruments?
Reaper is just for loading sounds on to?
It has no instruments?
I also noticed that when I download guitar VST plug-ins, Reaper doesn't recognize them.

Hi nelsonkane, welcome!
Reaper doesn't come bundled with its own instruments (except for a few very simple things), but it handles anything you put in it, including any free instrument you find here
http://www.kvraudio.com/plugins/instruments/free/newest
or
http://vst4free.com/index.php?m=VSTi
As far as a guitar VST not being recognized after downloading, make sure you put it in the proper plugins folder after downloading, depending on if you're on a Mac or PC. Never found a guitar VST that Reaper didn't run.

Thanks.
Well, I've been to that KVR page, and some of them seem too dangerous to download.
But I downloaded a guitar called Karoryfer Cute Emily Dirty, anyway, even though my computer warned me not to.
I went to Windows (C , then opened up REAPER (x64)
and then I put it in to my REAPER (x64) with all of the REAPER (x64) files.
Was that the right thing to do, or should it have been put in to a different part of the REAPER (x64)?
It looks like it may be in my Reaper, but my Reaper says "off line."
Now what?

Okay, I have a question
I guess you must be assuming that I've already purchased it. I don't see any way to get in to the preferences without buying it.
I don't see any reason to buy it. It hasn't proven that it's any better than free sites like Bandlab and Soundtrap.
Where do I find the Reader preferences so that I can go to
"Preference > VST"?

Why not view some of the videos linked at the top of this page - this will get you going much faster than posting one question at a time trying to get started.

FWIW, I've downloaded probably every free instrument on KVR and VST4free to check them out and never had the least problem with any kind of virus/malware at all. Half of them went right in the trash : ) but some I still use happily. For example, the creator or the Cute Dirty Emily instrument has many more
http://vst4free.com/index.php?dev=bi...nstruments&l=0
some of which are pretty good for free first instruments to make music with.

Thanks, but I did not install the plug-in inside the "plug-ins," because I didn't know it was a plug-in. It's called "Karoryfer Cute Emily Dirty" and I had put it in with all of the other items that are in REAPER (x64).
Should I have opened Plugins and put Karoryfer in the Plugins. Okay, I will do that.
I just took it out, opened up the Plugins, and put Karoryfer in to the Plugins.
Okay, I did that, and now it gives me this for some reason: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\VstPlugins;C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins;C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3
I see the word Steinberg there for some reason. I do not see the word Karoryfer there.
I don't have a browse button there. When I clicked on "auto-detect," it gave me that URL above, which doesn't seem to have anything to do with the Karoryfer.

I was about to tell you about the Steinburg folder however I stopped myself.
What you need to do to save yourself and others is to get out the Reaper manual
nelsonkane.
Start at the beginning sooner than later you will read that you have to place your foreign ( not Reaper / JS plugins these have their own folder) vst's in the computer in a recognizable folder and let Reaper preferences know were to scan for them.
(Steinburg folder can be one of them.)
That manual is your friend and very well written I never used to read manuals either...

And I would add to not worry about what your previous experience with video tutorials has been. Two reasons: 1) You sort of *need* to, and; 2) The videos linked here are really well done. most are 10 minutes or so and well focused on a specific feature or function.
Reaper is a great tool but someone without previous digital audio experience can't really jump in *without* reading the manual and/or watching some videos. It's worth it.

+1 and an explanation: asking about basic things you never tried to figure out yourself is expecting others to do your homework.
Besides, it is impossible to learn a complex professional application by asking questions on the forum. You have to do your own research.

You can put plugins anywhere on your computer that you want to. Even on a different drive. Just make sure you add the path to that particular drive/folder so Reaper can scan it.

I'm not trying to to discourage you for the hell of it, but if you're not a fan of poking around under the hood and making things work "your way," I think you might find yourself frustrated by Reaper in general. It is amazingly versatile and customizable but it doens't try to do anything for you - it's a blessing to some but can be harder to use for common tasks than more prescriptive DAWs.

ROFL, there are tons of free VSTi's, just get those and use in Reaper.
I can't believe people actually complain about this while there is so many things to fix in Reaper...

Are you talking about this?
http://vst4free.com/free_vst.php?plu..._Dirty&id=2316
You have it unzipped, right?
You can put the files from the archive there:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\VstPlugins
Then start REAPER.
Menu: Insert
Virtual instrument on new track...
And in the newly opened window:
VSTi: Karoryfer Cute E (x86) (bigcat) (32 out)
or something like that.

People should keep in mind that one of the reasons Reaper doesn't cost as much as some other DAWS, is precisely because it doesn't come bundled with a bunch of instruments. I used to use Sonar, which costs a lot more than Reaper, but still had to purchase VSTIs anyway, as the ones in Sonar were only of limited use for me. I'm sure that some folks find that the instruments in other VSTIs are fine and happily make music with them. But most find they need to purchase third-party ones anyway. In which case you still come out ahead with Reaper. You have more money to spend on the instruments, because you were smart and purchased Reaper.

I think the best way is to dive in and start using it. Of course read the manual, I don't know how anyone could learn Reaper without some manual study. It is very well written and organized. I bought a hard copy as I like to curl up in a chair with a cup of coffee with it. Take notes. When stumped, ask on the forum. Although just googling will probably get you an answer sooner. I often find a forum post from the past that addresses the issue. If you have worked with other DAWS, learning Reaper isn't hard. If it's your first one, you really need the manual. But you also have to use it. Once something clicks, you tend not to forget it (unless you're getting up there like me, and embarrassingly ask the same question twice, forgetting that you already solved the problem a month ago).

Any decent software automatically scans the brain waves of the current user and reliably detects what exactly he is up to (in contrast to any other possible user) and provides nothing but the appropriate work flow.
(Google and Twitter do this all the time, preventing to offer any distractive alternatives to the lazy users.)

Yes, it might be a bit tough to figure out a rather complex bit of software like Reaper when you're just learning computers. First things first.

Especially now the OP seems to have gone to ground. It's like using a chisel the wrong way round and wondering why it keeps sticking into your mallet - and not shaving the wood!

Honestly the way some of the responses in this thread are going I don't blame him. Should probably stick to strongly encouraging him to use the manual and the video tutorials.

The trouble is he has several threads like this, always says he can't learn from videos, has been asked several times how he does like to learn but never answers. There's not a lot you can do to help someone who simply rejects every suggestion and isn't at all responsive. That's classic troll behaviour so that's how he gets treated.
Shame if he is genuine but...

right on... manuals are just stupid... who needs 'em? Ain't it obvious that anyone born after 1900 automatically came in with all the computer skills that would ever be needed. It's hard coded into the DNA. You just 'know it'... no need to learn anything ever again.
All the people at Microsoft, Apple, and Reaper who write manuals are idiots, just doing busy work to pretend they have a job... geez what a joke.
So don't worry, NEVER even look at a manual nor at a video tutorial... they will only confuse you and obscure your own inbred native intelligence. Just click something and push some buttons and have fun.

The printed manual is great, it has the same content as the PDF.
I have some 'best of' free plugins in website listed below. That will help you get started. Also a copy of Computer Music magazine has a ton of VSTi and VST that are free. The ones by u-he and others are top notch.
Reaper does so much, it can be complex to learn. You don't have to know everything to get started.

Well anyway thanks for telling him that I didn't give him a virus! I wonder why his computer warned him not to download it?
Also for the guitars always use an amp sim. People kick them up and don't realize they are usually recorded DI and hate them. Run them through Amplitube or Guitar Rig or something please.

Why do people do this? Plants from other DAWS? Man, it's a cut-throat world out there. I mentioned recently that I was disappointed with East West's Hollywood Brass, now I can't post on their forum. Oh well, they're West Coast. Not into free speech, I guess.
