Default Can’t hear MIDI Recording

I’ve tried to work this out with the Reaper manual but I’m getting nowhere.

I’m using a Korg K25 MIDI Keyboard controller with the Korg M1 Le Software Synth. The keyboard has no in-built sounds.

When I try to record, the red bar in the track window moves up and down in response of the music so it looks as if Reaper is recognising the keyboard. A series of dashes appear on the bar where there is normally a graphic depiction of audio sounds. These dashes are higher on the bar for high notes and lower for bass notes. However when I replay the track I can hear no sound through my speakers.

I’m probably doing something silly but can’t work out what it could be.

You have to direct it to a VSTi Sampler or Synth. Midi itself will have no sound.

You need to add a "plugin" to Reaper - that's a separate software app that will generate the sound for you. There are thousands to choose from - starting at $0 and going up to several hundreds.

I would go here are pick up one to start with:
http://www.kvraudio.com/product/zebralette-by-u-he

This will help too:
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=25764
-- once you have installed the plugin into a folder
-- you tell Reaper where the plugins are located
-- then load the plugin onto the track
-- any MIDI received from your keyboard will trigger osunds from the plugin

There have been several threads with links to free plugins. I'm sure someone will help me out and post the links.

Well, before you go downloading all that cool stuff, you say you have the Korg M1 LE software synth already? Click on the FX button on your track with the midi, and select the KORG from the list of plugins. If it doesn't show up, then it may not be installed...

Thanks for the replies guys.

Acting on your info I found a .dll for Korg M1 Le in my Program Folder and copied it to my Plugins Folder. Reaper can now recognise it and it seems to be working well so far.

I have also ordered a copy of the Computer Music Special Magazine which I hope will throw more light on PC recording as I know virtually nothing!

I’ve been using Reaper for a couple of months now but have only learned about 1 per cent of what all the different buttons and commands do.

It’s a very steep learning curve compared to the old days with a four track Fostex machine but, on the other hand, what you can do with DAW’s is amazing.

Check Google and Youtube for Reaper tutorials, there's plenty around Sometimes it's good even for the more advanced users to watch some of these, you often pick up small things here and there It's not that you need to utilize all of it, simply just so you get an idea of what you can do with Reaper.
