Multi PROGRAM MIDI Keyswitch
Hi all
I'm new with Reaper (I used Cubase). Your JS tool is very usefull, thanks. Would it be possible to modifie it in order to change programs with KS instead of Channels, I gess it would be easy for you?
Actualy i compose orchestral scores with about 40 instruments with 3, 4, or 5 articulations for each one, via Kontakt player. It's a bit too much for my CPU and RAM. So I used to load all the articulations for 1 instrument in a Instrument Bank in Kontakt (on 1 mIDI channel but with 16 programs), therefore i can load 16 instruments in 1 Kontakt, and so only 5 or 6 Kontakts for all my project.
Hope you can help me...

Hello,
Glad you're enjoying the plugin.
I haven't done any JS scripting for over a year and can't remember a thing about it, I'll have to start over again sometime. :-)
In the meantime, 40 instruments doesn't sound like a huge amount. I don't know what your setup is but the most efficient way I have found to run sample libraries is have one track per instrument - one instance of Kontakt per track - and load all the articulations for that instrument (less than 16 articulations I would imagine, especially with key switch instruments) and then one instance of the Multi Channel MIDI key switch on each track too. This usually works out better (or not much worse) resource wise inside Reaper than loading several instruments in one instance of Kontakt.

Is it Kontakts standard library or some custom instruments?

I'm using LA Scoring Strings an EWQL Orchestra. CPU=i5 2500k, RAM=8Gb.
I did those experiments in Reaper:
One instance of Kontakt empty: cpu: from 0 to 19%
30 instances of Kontakt empty: cpu: from 31 to40% (and RAM used: 2.66 Gb instead of 1.3 Gb)
2.3Gb of samples loaded in 16 instances of Kontakt: cpu: 23-32%
2.3Gb of samples loaded in 1 Instrument Bank in 1 instance of Kontakt: cpu:0-20%
Kontakt uses resources. Using instrument bank seems to be more efficient than too many instances (I think I saw that in Kontakt 's manual...).
That's why i would like to switch program instead of channel. It's not as simple as one instance per instrument, but when your template is done, you don't have to configure it everytime.

Seems like your set up will be more efficient. Hopefully someone on here will be able to adapt my script for you, I'm sure it will be a fairly simple thing to do.

Ok, thanks for sharing. That's a significant difference.
But why are you using only one midi-channel? Are you not using a multi-setup?

I'm sure too it's a easy thing to do for somebody on the forum. I think I will open a new thread. thanks anyway.
G-Sun, I open many articulations in one Instrument Bank, and 16 Instrument Banks in one Kontakt (FX of a "master track" called "strings" for example). Each Intrument bank has it own MIDI channel. Each track (violin1, 2, viola ...) has his own MIDI channel too, send to the track "strings". Finally only one Kontakt plays all the strings. Am I clear?
One thing I forgot to say: I use Windows 7 x64, Reaper x64 BUT Kontakt 4 x32 "bridged" by Reaper. May be the "bridging" is using more cpu resources?

Yes it almost certainly will. Use the 64bit version if you can

Ok, Kontakt instrument banks was new to me.
Have you looked at this:
http://www.askaudiomag.com/articles/...-banks-feature
So, you need a note to program-change-tool?
Try some pzmidi:
http://www.thepiz.org/plugins/?p=pizmidi
eg. midiConverter2

Yes, that's exactly what I'd like to do, but not with Pro Tools ;-). With Cubase I Used the "Expression Map": you can change the expression in the Expression Map (pizz, legato...) or just with a KS, and it send a MIDI cc to Kontakt (a Program change for me).
In reaper you can make a Program Change in the MIDI List. But I want to change with KS so I can try the the different articulations easily, I can record in live with articulation changes, and I can edit articulations directly in the Piano Roll.
I will try a pizzmidi tools, thanks for the link.

Need Some Help With this ;-)
I am trying to use this with StylusRMX and when I have the plug enable Stylus won't play back or trigger the midi notes. When I have the plug disabled then I can hear the midi part being played back.
So what am I missing?
Thanks!
