How do you pronounce "DAW"?
I was talking to a musician friend the other day about Reaper and suddenly he started laughing at me.
It turns out I've been saying "DAW" incorrectly, according to him.
I'd been saying "Door", rhymes with core, bore and paw.
He says it is supposed to rhyme with "wow" or "cow". I said that was illogical (captain), but he swears I'm wrong saying "door".
What should it be?
Thanks,
MK

I finding daw rhyming with cow, and in an Aussie accent q amusing.
I try not to talk to anyone about them...
If I did its door or d.a.w
come to think of it i dont say door, more dah. dont say it often enough for it to be a problem!

You both might be wrong.
DAW is an acronym of sorts like NASA or REAPER and I think most acronyms are probably correctly pronounced phonetically like D + AWE. It's funny though because some east coasters seem to say "Dow", but that might be the accent.
Seems the only time people don't use phonics for things like that is when the phonics don't make sense, like CIA, NSA, IRS, would would sound pretty weird trying to say them as a single word so they pronounce the individual letters, which many people actually do with DAW, pronounce it as D,A,W, letter by letter.
But the only reason people call Nasa nasa is because it sounds ok, unlike trying to make NTSB into a word.

I can't answer your question, but I love how "door" rhymes with "paw" in Australian.

Reminds me when my niece had a pet named Effeyessaich (emphasis on the "ess".)
Guess what kind of creature was.

It was already a word, before the acronym.
Check Webster's and the "ryhmes with" references,

If something resolves phonetically I pronounce it like it looks until I'm told otherwise,,,
Cock-ohs?
Or if you're hipster dufus like Kramer, Cock-ohz.
At any rate, we word pronounce all of the acronyms that easily resolve like DAW, like SCOTUS, POTUS, FLOTUS, the rest we spell out.

Fish! It's a fish right? I'm proud of myself.
I (a yank) say it as Daaaaaa (short a, not like day), but I believe it is whatever your locale is used to. Like your Australian imaginary R's.

I've always pronounced it like "dog", without the -G-; but I also pronounce WIFI, "whiffy" and most people look at me funny for it, so...

When in doubt go to Webster's.
At least if you pronounce something wrong after that you can blame Webster's.
But yeah, DOG without the G is the way most around here say it.
Teddy Riley seem to call it DAWR.
But some US East Coasters almost speak a foreign language, if you go too far North East you might need a translator.

We have a winner!
More related to the opportunity, what exactly comprises the daw? Is it just the core software like Reaper? Is it the entire collection of software that includes plug-ins, vsti, etc? Is it just the computer hardware? All of the above?
My vote is that the DAW is the core application plus the computer it runs on.

I didn't know REAPER was an acronym? What does it stand for?
Also, how do you pronounce the names of reaper FX? eg for ReaSynth is it ree synth or ree ah synth?

That's how I've always said it. This thread is the first I've ever heard of anyone doing otherwise.

I assumed it was 'Cock-ose', where it would rhyme with 'Cock-dose'.
And now I feel like I need a shower.

Good question. No matter how i think about it i still always end up saying "Re-Uh-thing".
Like Chia pet.
It's a psychological thing with me i guess. I just can't make the a silent, if it's even supposed to be.
Is it Ree-Synth or Re-a-synth? No idea. How does Kenny Gioia say it on the vids?

Door rhymes with paw in English, if it doesn't rhyme for you that means you have an accent

In our part of the world we pronounce it the "proper" English way
. 'r' is often a vowel modifier, not pronounced in its own right.
tl:dr, rhymes with door.

Ah but surely that is because you are not only a Northern Bastid, but a Lanc `un too!
(that`ll get the yanks scratching their heads)
Just noticed feverdream is in Preston! I feel ganged up on.

I hardly ever mention the term "DAW" - "sequencer" and "host" are the things that matter to me, and I also use them for things which aren't "digital audio".

thats kind of funny. Same as my wife. Seems like most women say "brah", most guys (the ones I know anyway) say bra like rhymes with flaw, saw, thaw, etc. I wonder why that is...
Oh, I usually refer to someones DAW as whatever software they are using. "What software do you run?", "What's your system run with?"
Maybe I'm weird.... (probably) I know a girl who is always mis-pronouncing things.. library = lieberry, fabulous = favulous, etc. The other day she said someone got "raped over the coals... ". Huh, wth?

Why use 5 syllables with "Dee A double-U" and waste time and energy when 1 syllable will do the job? Personally, it's one word, "DAW" and it rhymes with paw, saw and law, but definitely not with door.
As for Cockos - Cock rhymes with dock, crock, and Spock (R.I.P), and 'os' rhymes with floss, gloss, and toss (the last bit sounds like a perfect Saturday night...).
*Disclaimer: I'm Scottish, the Queen's English is lost on me.

I skip the whole DAW thing and go directly to "Peeta" - the written version being P I T A.
