Default Set note length to grid size of all selected notes

I would like to make an action/Toolbar button, whatever, that will set all note lengths to grid size. It may be ok to have it quantize at the same time, but that might bother me in the future.

I would like to do this without modifying any default quantize behaviour. I do believe that in the quantize dialog I can choose how quantize affects note length, but I generally don't want it to, however, there are instances where I do want this behaviour.

Any ideas? I could find an action that set note lengths to grid size.

I don't think you do. that sounds awesome. In the menu... huh. That's too obvious.

Gonna make a toolbar button for that one. I would have thought I would find it in the actions menu though, even if it is in the menu.

It's funny, most of everything in the menus are things I never use. I've customized stuff I use so much, that I just go in the actions list right away, because my aim is to customize whatever that thing is that I want anyway.

I don't even think it is in the default menu, so you probably did find it in the action list at least once .
Action list, MIDI editor section: "Edit: Set note length to grid size" (Cmd ID 40633).

There is a fault with this action in that it doesn't work across multiple editable items as of yet. http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?p=1341594

gofer has it right:

and yes you can put that action in both menus and toolbars

...suggestion:

another good toolbar action is Set Note Length to Selected

which means you select some note you want, clk that action and then the new notes you clk into the item will be of that same length...

I have these two on a toolbar that also has a bunch of grid size settings on it... easier for me than going to the bottom to pick a grid size.

That's pretty cool. I have my '[' and ']' set to increase decrease grid size, it goes really fast, just press it until it looks like how I want it. I also have a strange habit I guess, of never ever clicking in a midi note. I always ctrl click one.

I usually record with midi keyboard, but also if I make a few on a beat or something, then I have a pool of velocities to choose from. So, I just ctrl+click and drag a note that has the velocity I want, and then size it how I want, if it's musical, and often for beats, I'll just leave it whatever length it is, and just change it if I have the same note following soon enough for the first one to be in the way.

It's actually fairly rare that I want to quantize note length, but it happens every so often.

So you leave off use last note length for insert or you use both?

I find this invaluable, particularly with the paint tool when doing drums. Switch grid, say to 1/8 triplets, paint a row of triplet snare hits or whatever, then switch to another grid for another set of hits. The grid ends up dictating the rhythm according to how you chose to set it as you work. Much easier to do this with grid toolbar buttons, particularly if you float them.
