Why are you copying bits of the first post to the end of the thread?

Indeed not very handy and a bit confusing.
@MacFizz: I want to ask you not to copy parts of the list into the thread because many times the links that are posted with the plugins change over time. If this happens I'm updating the list but the copied parts in your messages will obviously not stay maintained this way.
Besides, be a little patient please as I will add the information about pc/mac-compatibility into the list soon enough

Charlatan
I find Charlatan's architecture simple and dead easy to use. And it sounds very good.

I've been following the dev-discussion on KVR, but haven't got into testing it myself. I'll try it out soon as I've read quite positive things about it.
Still have to try my own recent suggestions yet, I'm currently building a track-template with controller assignments for PG-8X

Rock - ConcreteFX
Hello to all the Freeware junkies,
I want you to hint at Rock, a synth of ConcreteFX (last update 2004).
I like the sound but mainly the extraordinary possibilities to modify the sound. It has two oscs, which
can be combined in additive, ringmod, FM and sync.

Just downloaded. Haven't tried it. I'm sure it's wonderful.

Can anyone suggest a freeware multiband transient processor similar to Waves TransX? I can just find a non multiband one called Flux BitterSweetII.

This one is definitely worth a mention - Kairatune
http://www.futucraft.com/kairatune/
monophonic and pretty tough on the cpu but it has a great sound - i would imagine it can cut through a mix particularly well

I have lurked in this monster of a thread since the day i joined. it is like computer music's dvd beginners start-up folder but only 1000000 times better.
what are everybody's thoughts on reasynth, when used in tandem with some other basic reaplugins and reaper's awesome modulation features ? even multiple instances are amazingly low on CPU usage.
if someonce can suggest a lower CPU usage than that for a basic but nifty freeware synth, im all ears.

reasynth has some pretty bad aliasing in the higher registers iirc, no filter and a real lack of sound shaping modulation parameters. Synth1 is probably the lowest cpu/maximum functionality freebie out there

freealpha is an awesome little synth - very low cpu and a fantastic filter. i wouldn't say oatmeal is that light on cpu once you start piling on the polyphony.

This is not my thread but...
For organ, try Organ1. http://www.bojo-software.com/
I think there was also a good vintage organ VSTi somewhere in the first post in this thread.
For orchestral, try squidfont. http://soundfonts.darkesword.com/
Use sfz to play it. sfz is also listed in aforementioned first post in this thread.

I've posted this in its own thread already but I think this might be worth a mention here too.
The latest version of freeverb3 features a new verb called ProG that sounds really good. True stereo(ish), very lush, modulation, plenty of filtering options. Easily one of the best free algo verbs I've heard, at least for large spaces. Hideous UI though :P

There are some good church organ sf2s amongst these (surely there is a good mac sf2 player?)

I set a rule for my own use after getting fully on-board with using a DAW to do my own recording: I'm using ONLY free stuff. After testing some 200 altogether of all available online for VST and VSTi, I have it down to my favorite 90 or so, and all of these work on my two favorite systems -- Podium and Reaper. I simply refuse to spend money on plugins when there are so may top-quality and professional-sounding bits of software available. In fact, I even left Cubase because I was unwilling to spend the amounts they want to upgrade (and I really don't care for how their DAW is set up anyway).
I have almost all of the best software that's been listed on this thread. I've tossed out a few, such as blooo synth, because some others here do the same job so much better. My next goal in the weeks ahead is to toss out some more. I've been keeping track of the ones I don't use as much and why, my ultimate goal being to have a lean and mean system with absolutely no bloat.
I should add to all this that I'm a PC user -- Windows 7 64-bit -- and not remotely interested in switching to a MAC as I keep my PC working just as well or better than the false mythology of better performance that follows MAC users. There's also no way I'm going to run anything other than a 32-bit DAW on my W7, at least until all the plugs are available in 64 and all those issues have gone away. (I give it a good 5 more years.) Using something like J-Bridge gives mixed results and I don't have the time to bother with yet another bunch of screwing around.
I bought licenses for both Podium and Reaper because I felt they are quality software and the price was more than reasonable, but I save my real money for the more important items such as good microphones. Ha, I'm loving my setup and doing fine. You can keep all those ridiculous $200 plugins for the rich kids who need to make up for their lack of talent by smearing their sound over with gadgets! I try to remember always that, for me at least, it's about the MUSIC, and it's not the toys for why I came here in the first place.

Nice EQ
Here's a very nice EQ, analog style, very smooth.
It sounds great on guitars and vocals, very subtle.
works on Windows and Mac

i have discovered an older freeware called blip (unrelated to blip1000 or blip2000) that made my day !
http://www.nicolasfournel.com/blip.htm
it is A standalone but man oh man....it is a huge 64 x 64 matrix with 64 assignable samples and all kinds of patterns can be generated /'painted' into the matrix....plus randomization...very intuitive
wish the developer had done more though
enjoy and let me know what you think

ur welcome
once you understand the three colors (for pitch, velocity and pan) and the possibilities in straight painting as well as randomization and wave functions, you will be playing for hours
really amazing sounding beats and patterns in 5 mins
