Is the "Behind a curtain" effect for the lead vocals intentional ?

Good question.

No, she's singing like that 'cos she's not built up her confidence yet - she's a newbie, we're working on that.

Also looking at the project it seems I rolled a LP filter pretty high for some reason on that track - which I'll look into. I may have to blame Gremlins for that.

The lead vox sound a bit muddy in the low.

Thanks, I'll give that some tweaking.

Did a couple of cuts in the low mids to make lead vocal less muddy but I'm not sure I'm hearing much difference tbh - I need some more experienced ears please.

Also the vocals are being muddied by the remnants of a lead (male) vocal that bled into the Drum OH when the drum track was originally recorded - I gated most out but if I treat it any more it really sucks the life out of the hats.

hi,

hm. hearing the "after" mix.
like her timbre, but yes, shes very inconfident, as you mentioned.
vox is still very "behind the curtain". and sometimes distorted and very dry to my ears and not in the mix, but on top of it.

the instrumental. i think its not well balanced. the bass is way to soft, same with the skank. and there's plenty room for fx. i would throw in some more delays and reverb - its reggae!

just my opinion!

greetings,

micha

p.s. the more often i hear it, i'm think: this tune should get rid of this distorted guitar, need some organ and some percussion, which would suit the vocal better.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll give the instrumentation a lift when I get some motivation on and post back.

Yeah, it's loosely reggae but not really "reggae" reggae if you get my drift. Been working on this a long time and struggling to keep enthused at this stage - I'll probably leave the instruments as they are until/unless I get some sudden inspiration.

hi,

yes, would like to here it then! i got your drift, but i think it sounds very very reggae in between the guitar licks. i personally would try to accent that a bit more by lifting the bass and using more fx, delay lay lay lay.

the male voice... maybe a sound like a clavinet or so could mask it?

i totally understand your motivation issue after tweaking and listening too long to a mix! in my favorite forum, there we have a chapter called "mix machine" where people put their multitracks and a preview to let other people mix. sometimes the opener gives guidlines how he/she wants the mix to be, sometimes the mixer has total freedom. its always interresting to listen to different approaches!

maybe that is an option for you to get some inspiration or a good mix you're pleased with?

Wow, completely dig it. Great tune. Would change absolutely nothing as of the mix posted on SoundCloud @ 5/25/17 - 3:35 PM.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it and appreciate the feedback.

Present state is on hold, I'm thinking of re-doing the vocals myself in a few weeks.

I am sure this track will be finished eventually, just wwaiting for my mojo to kic back in.

Default LCR

I would play more with pan and make more space for the instruments adding on a send track in prefader mode reverb and other fx.. (LCR)
intersting voice.... sounds not like a common vocal... if that was your intention then you succeed!!
i am not a professional...
cool track!!!
