Default writer/producer

Is the producer in this case (max martin) getting paid more royalties than the other writers since he is a writer + producer? or was he just paid an extra fee to make the recording (in addition to the royalties of being a writer)?

It all depends...

But I suspect you're victim of some confusion here: in copyright (and so-called 'neighbouring rights') law, whenever there's mention of a "producer" getting royalties, it typically does *not* refer to rewarding the creative efforts and contributions of the person responsible for the sound, e.g. tweaking knobs behind the mixing desk in the studio. It's simply about rewarding the *investor* (i.e. the owner of the record label).

In most cases in the US, the producer is contracted to the label, and gets paid for his/her service.

Some super-successful producers (Max Martin certainly qualifies here) might get the label to make a side deal for a percentage of profits if the song takes off up the charts, but this is not part of the standard royalty structure.

You get what you negotiate, not what you deserve.
