USE REAINSERT FOR OUTBOARD GEAR
Hi,
Well, I'm trying to test reaper, maybe to migrate from wavelab.
But I have a main problem.
When I put reainsert in FX, all is ok, I heard my outboard gear effect on the track ( hardware monitoring switch like I do with wavelab ), but if I apply another VST after reainsert, they don't affect the track, before it's ok by the way.
I don't have this problem with wavelab, I admit it's not the same software :
-so I try different routing ( a lot of hours ) with my soundcard and soundcard parameters in Reaper, but all is the same.
-so I try to create an another track and routing the source track to this second track, but when I put a VST to this second track, same, it don't affect the sound.
- and unfortunately nothing in user manual can help me...
It seems to be when I put reainsert, I lost the monitoring of master bus. For exemple, if I check an audio file in file explorer, I don't heard the preview, but it's ok when reainsert is not activate. If I decrease Master bus fader there is no effect with reainsert activate.
So maybe I miss something, but I don't know what.
Anyone had try this ?
P.S. : sorry if my english hurts somebody

Nobody ? I test with another sequencer, and it's works, plugs after hardware insert affect the track sound. I don't understand why with Reaper it's not possible...

please show us exactly how you're doing it.

Yes human error for sure !
Thanks for your reply.
Simply in example, I create just one track, then in track Fx section, I put, in example, one VST, just after, reainsert and finally an another vst.
I heard everything reinsert included, but after reainsert, I see signal in the last VST, but, in exemple if I raise gain in this VST, nothing happened...
And I don't understand why ?
Maybe I need to make a screenshot, let me know, sorry if it's not clear...
Thanks again !

Hello
Reainsert defaults to the main outputs you are using in the mixer's master. You need to set up a different pair of inputs/outputs to use it, ie. if your main outputs are your audiointerfaces 5/6 you need to select different outputs to send out of reainsert to the hardware. Now you are listening to the output of reainsert and bypassing the rest of reaper's signal chain. The signal is probably being monitored from your soundcards mixer or similar with your current configuration.
I'm using reainsert a lot, my monitoring happens on my soundcards outputs 3/4 and I have set up reainsert to use output/input 1/2. I also use sonarworks and one must remember to set up the plugin also so it uses correct output, otherwise it is possible to have it in the analog loop eqing the signal sent to hardware. Are you familiar with reaper's monitor FX? That's where my sonarworks is sitting always. Using the plugin pin connector-dialog you can verify that sonarworks is in the right signal path.
So you need one signal path for monitoring and another path for insert loop.
Hope this helps,
best
J

Thanks a lot for reply!
Yes, make sense! And it's exactly in this way my wavelab is setup.I monitor on channels 1 and 2, and channel 5 and 6 (spdif) are use for send/return.
But here is my problem, in reaper if I choose Channel 1 and 2 for out, in reinsert, I have no other choices than channel 1 and 2 for send!
Really weird.
Any idea?

Do you have the outputs setup correctly under Audio Devices for your interface?

Yes I think so, it's works with others DAW.
But here is my complete setup in reaper + sound card routing.
Here my choice in reainsert ( no choice in fact )
In addition, if I push gain in the last VST to the max, I have a loud somersault briefly and reaper close the sound ( too loud but before I don't hear raising)...
I'm lost in reaper...

I don't know your other pieces you're using..
But your interface should have all your I/0 selected.. Like in my case..I use a SSL Aplha Link there's 24 I/0 plus 2ch spdif. So I tell the inputs ch 1 to ch 26 and the same for outputs..
Now I really only use spdif to my dangerous dbox for monitoring.
When I use reInsert I have any of those other 24chs to chose from.. So I'm still monitoring with only spdif.
What I take from your pics.. Your interface is using ch 5 and 6 both in and out.. Yet your trying to also use 5/6 for ReInsert..

Yes, exactly, channel 5 and 6 are IN and OUT in SPDIF, I'll show tomorow a scrrenshot of Wavelab config with soundcard routing ( where it's work ) maybe it could help.
I send audio via spdif to a DAC in analog loop, and return in an ADC to SPDIF, and monitor ( for the moment ) with the soundcard.
Thanks

you can't/shouldn't use ReaInsert with the same i/o as your main mix.
Send it to a different set of inputs and outputs from your main.

Hi,
Yes Faderjockey is right, you should have ALL soundcard inputs (from analog1 to spdif) and ALL outputs selected from preferences for reaper to use, now you are forcing reaper to use only spdif and nothing else. I think that's where the problem lies. The way of setting things up for reaper to use is probably different from wavelab. Please check the manual from page 24, it's clearly explained there.
best

I'm very confused,I'm stupid, it's written!
Thanks JTF and others, it's exactly that, in sound card parameters, I don't choose all of input and output, I must choose the begining input/output and the last input/output to have both, I'll testing it today and let you know...
Really really thanks to all for my bad.

Ok it's works perfectly ! You make my day !
Now I can work properly with stability ( wavelab is very unstable )
I think I'm a reaper guy now ! I'm so happy.
Thanks a lot guy ( I think I have to read better user manual in the future )
Bye !

With one track it works perfectly, maybe with more than one instance it will be buggy, I'll try with a bigger project. It's not for mixing by the way, so I'll not have more than fifteen tracks, maybe a little more. So we will see!

You can have dropouts and other glitches.
Try experimenting with Anticipative FX OFF in the Options in any case.

Hello JTF,
I have been reading everything I can on Reainsert to try and get it wrapped around my head, and have been following all advice to a "T" but somehow it is just not working for me.
...but maybe the quote above is where my achilles heel resides. What do you mean by main outputs? Is "main" the monitors. If so my monitors are on 7 & 8 out of my RME interface. What I'm trying to do is simple: I have a recorded track. I'm sending that track out via outputs 1 & 2 to a hardware eq and having it comeback to inputs 3 & 4. I have the track routed to hardware outputs 7 & 8 for monitoring. I also having it routed 1 & 2 for the send to the hardware unit. However,, when I tweak controls I hear no difference but sometimes a type of feedback when I crank the trim on the eq. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi!
Ok I'll try to help you out here. Using Reainsert is really quite simple. The track goes to your monitor outputs 7/8. You hook up your external gear to the ins/outs of your choice (any particular reason you are using in 3/4 and not 1/2? I usually try to use the same input/output pair for clarity) and choose the ins/outs you connected the hardware in reainsert's plugin window. You don't need to send the signal anywhere else. If you can post a picture from your mixer/reainsert it could reveal something..
