Default Reaper x64 scanning all dll files in windows

While trying to reorganize some plugins, I must have accidentally given Reaper a path to scan in VST settings that has it scanning what appears to be every single dll file in Windows. I can't tell if the scan is looping (unlikely I would think) or there's a mind-boggling number of dll files in the system, but it feels like it is interminable - countless error messages appear as fast as I can dispatch them. If I can't get through the scan sequence, I can't look at the path settings in options. I've uninstalled and re-installed both 64 and 32 bit, and rebooted. I've tried deleting the paths through Reaper app data. No change. Can anyone suggest an alternative tack?

Edit the path out of your reaper config (ini) file.

Find the VST path list line in reaper.ini and change it to something reasonable:

e.g. vstpath=C:\Music Production\VST_64 Plugins

Then start Reaper and do a "Clear cache / Rescan"

Thanks for the quick responses guys! But, while I was waiting I remembered that just prior to the problem I had installed some plugins from TAL to try them out. So, I removed them and did a system recovery to a point just before having installed them. Everything seems to run smoothly again! Perhaps there was some conflict between the TAL plugins and some others? Dunno - but it seems to be fine now. So, thanks again!

Default 64Bit Windows 7 Auto-Detect VST

I have experience a similar but not the same problem, mine was with 64bit windows 7, i find it hard to scan plugins, the auto-detect doesn't seem to work. every time i click it all my scanned VST is remove and have to start over on finding them.

I downloaded the latest release for 2 weeks ago.
I am also using a laptop fujitsu with 4gb ram i3 core processor.
