HELP!: the sound/audio Out disappeared!

All of a sudden, I open reaper up and I have no DAW audio output.
i have a Scarlett 18i8 and when setting the setting to "DAW Tracking" or "Mixing" I get no audio routed through to my interface.

any suggestions? I have read every posy i can about the subject, and tried everything. uninstalled and reinstalled. I might try an older version of reaper.

So I take it the output from Reaper is not showing in the Scarlet Mix Control software?

Edit: PS I also have a Scarlett 18i8 (1st generation)

correct in the DAW channel - no audio

Do you get audio out of Reaper if you change the audio output in Reaper to Direct sound or wave out?

Trying to narrow down the problem....

I didn't try that. I will. i just assumed that the 18i8 turned all other audio cards off so they wouldn't work if i tried.
the weird thing is, the "DAW Tracking" setting works with Live..

It automatically starts up when I open REAPER and since I am not using it, I closed the audio channel and exited the Window. So in the midst of trying to get REAPER to route audio through my 18i8 again, I was trying ev rethink I could think of, and opened a channel in NINJAM. THAT, is what my problem was.
