Default Winamp going away on Dec20th

According to Slashdot ( http://tech.slashdot.org/story/13/11...on-december-20 ) Winamp will no longer be made available.

I used v0.something onwards. My favorite music player for years.

That's a bummer. The last great music player that didn't try to integrate itself into every aspect of your technology stack or kill you with adds.

I can't believe AOL is still a thing.

the way I feel about this is like an old relative dying.

you'll miss them, but you're glad they're out of misery.

it was a great product that AOL destroyed and kept undead for far too long.

Are you sure about that...? The reason I gave up on Winamp back in 2006 or so was because they started adding all that crap that dealt with watching videos, browsing the net inside the player, advertisements and so on...It just got too annoying.

(I know the older versions were much simpler and cleaner but I didn't have any interest in using those, too simple and limited for my taste.)

I haven't used it in a while, but if that's what they did to it, perhaps it deserves to die.

Which makes it a double bummer.

No votes for iTunes as the Winamp replacement?

Of course I am joking. iTunes can go to hell. Long live Foobar2000!

Wow, I am kinda shocked. I remember my parents used winamp when I was... like... a toddler.

Has Justin still had any involvement in Winamp/Nullsoft, or is it completely controlled by AOL?

RIP.
I had an old version, from way before the buyout. Worked like a champ. That computer died sometime around 2005. Lost a lot of hours' worth of manually inputting track titles on imported CD's. Ahhh, the good old days.

I've been using Winamp for years! It's kind of like that well worn t-shirt your wife wants you to throw away, ya know? I haven't changed versions in years as well...

Looked at Foobar and it just doesn't look like something I'm interested in but AIMP has just been installed. I think I should hold on to Winamp though... just to keep around...

very strong, now we have a really stable release.

still using 8yrs old builds from the 5.0x series,
i assume that the latest version is future proof
for the next decade. in the meantime aliens are
very busy with R&D to bring something more powerful.

things aren't as bad as they presented, the worst
case scenario i can imagine is to have as only option
the bit perfect foo crap then i would rather go back to
audio cassettes, by far more usable.

all good romances end <3

I switched to Foobar2000 some years ago after making this test:

...and I've been perfectly happy with it since.

I've never got why a music player should look like a star ship. All you need is a play button, a file list, and shuffle play hahaha

Default Plugins Make the Player

I use WinAmp because of the plugins. There are some I can live without, but MIDI control has made my life much better.

Is there another media player with a plugin that lets you control transport and volume via MIDI or OSC? Or - is there anyone here with experience who could make one for Foobar2000? I have zero experience with FB2k plugins just downloaded the SDK today.

It takes some trickery setting up, but once I got the large album art squares view I never went back to any other player. Especially now that I have touch devices, it is just the best way to tap scroll, tap and listen to an album at a time. I don't ever fiddle with playlists or podcasts. I just like to have my album grid and pick one, with the ability to use the search bar to pick a year, artist, or album title easily. That's why I'm a WinAmp user. The rest of the features I've hidden or disabled.

Exactly my case.

And forgive me if I'm wrong, but Winamp Lite installs zero sh*t. No ads, no browser crap, just the player. But of course, if you go for the überhugefullofshityoullneveruse version, you'll get what you're "paying" for.

I've been using Winamp for all those 15 years and I'm planning to keep using it for another 15 if the OS allows it.

Here is more info on this.
I truly realize now how important Winamp was for the Cockos ambition to get out a formidable daw for only $60 with an unlimited, uncrippled trial.
If it was not for Winamp then the Reaper world might have totally different today.

I wonder what could have saved winamp.
An online store for music? Streaming radio like spotify?

I used Winamp when it was simple (up to 2.x if I remember correctly) but abandoned it for Musikcube (defunct).

Recently, I switched to Clementine which is quite a pleasant player and works both on Windows and Linux.

I think Foobar2000 is a bit too raw without special skins.
I remember there have been different ways of using user skins on Foobar.

What's the preferred way today and where are the nicest skins?

Or a pretty alternative for Foobar?

Well... it's not exactly 1990 anymore.

Playing music from a computer is pretty darned easy these days... even if you only ever use the built in OS player, Media Player, Quicktime, whatever Linux uses for that.

I don't really need a skin or fancy db meters, I only need to hear the music playing.

Here is one way: Use Foobar to play music, then open up a picture you like (of something with skin perhaps), and watch that while listening to the music.
