Default Volume automation and render

I have a vocalist who is alittle too dynamic in his vocals enough that I would need to automate a compressor between verse and chorus. So I did some leveling with volume automation but the fader is post FX which doesn't help my compression problem. So I rendered, thinking the volume automation would be written to the new render but it is just copied which doesn't help me.

Is there a way to set the volume envelope pre fx or is there a way to render with the envelope and then I can add the compressor?

Hope this makes sense

Thanks!

try it by doing a send to the fx ....

when you create the send you can choose various post or pre fx... you'll see it.

Most likely I'd turn off the master parent on the original track, leave the volume automation you already have there and then have the send be 100% with it's Master Parent on...

render that... and carry on

Thanks, Hopi
I think I understand, I am not trying to render the compressor but somehow get the volume leveled before the compressor, so if I understand:

Track 1: Original vocal with volume automation, I send this to a new track (track2) post fx/post fader with master parent off.

Track 2: Render this to stem and then add the compressor to the stem

Is this right?

almost

I was thinking

Track 2 has the comp on it... and if you wanted you could even automate whatever on the comp on that track 2

was not thinking of a stem render... was thinking just solo those two tracks and do a normal render

IF you wanted you can have the render result added to the project as a new wav track...

and\or you can make a time selection and choose 'use time selection' in the render dialog

I see...like sending a single track post everything to a compressor buss or a folder with just one child. I will probably do a stem render of the buss/folder so I can delete melodyne.

Thank you for the input/suggestions! Very helpful

Additionally, there is a Pre FX volume envelope. Plus, here's a link to a few vocal rider Track Templates that could help with the broad dynamics: https://stash.reaper.fm/browse.php?q=...&x=-874&y=-335

you could just use the Pre-FX volume envelope.

or the take volume envelope.

following this thread with a similar question / situation.

and I'm not getting this figured out.

Say we have a single track with a bunch of FX on it ... BUT, we also have some volume automation [envelope] added.

If I needed to make this volume envelope to be rendered or frozen ... how to do this ?

OH ... I do NOT want the EFX to get rendered ... not at this point. I would like to have the audio levels applied only.

The example is for dealing with an audio track that has large dynamic sections [live stereo]. for example, I want to lower the crowd applause using envelopes ... then I can get the track at the proper level I want to work at BEFORE hitting my effects chain.

So ... how to render/freeze JUST the envelope into a track [destructively].

thanks for letting me hy-jack

RJ...

always 9 ways to do something in reaper, but right off the top:

Lets call your track "Track A"
disable the fx
have your vol envelope as desired

solo Track A

make a time selection of the full length of the track [or not]
render it and have the render dialog add it as new track, let's call that Track Y

Now delete the wav on Track A, delete the vol env. on Trak A also
cut and paste the rendered wav from Y to A, turn the FX back on for A.
Delete Track Y... done

could be done with sends also but this way should make it simply clear.

And another.

First, the track volume envelope is always post-fx. Keep that in mind, because you want to control the material before it hits your compressor, and I assume you want to do it on one track.

If hand-editing envelopes is your thing you have two choices, but the more practical way is to use the ITEM TAKE VOLUME ENVELOPE(the other beind the pre-fx volume envelope of the track), and bake that by using the action "RENDER AS NEW TAKE", which bakes the item take volume envelope in to new audio.

So the sequence of events for this method is:
  1. Switch on the take volume envelope in the context menu of your items(or use the relevant action on a selected bunch of items)

  2. Make your volume changes on the item take volume envelope(long title).

  3. To bake them in to audio, select the items and use the action "Render as new take". A new take will appear with the rendered audio, and the old take will remain available if you'd like to change your mind on something.

Should you prefer to ride faders, then the Feed-One-Track-In-To-Another is the better idea. If you'd like to bake that in to new audio, you can just FREEZE the feeding track, mute that track and copy the frozen audio on to the fed track that has the compressor and other processing on it.

Thus, Track 1 feeds exclusively to Track 2. Track 2 has the plugin processing on it. Track 1 uses the volume envelope to control the signal before it hits any processing on Track 2. Bake by Freezing Track 1 and copying that audio to Track 2, then mute Track 1(and unfreeze if you like).

So, hand editing and one track, or fader riding and two tracks. Your choice really, and there are probably a few more methods .
