Recorded this drum play-through of one of my band's tunes.
All drums are natural! No triggers or blended samples.
As some of you know, I try to avoid triggering and samples. I think trying to get a natural drum sound on records is a dying art form, unfortunately. Mainly rock and metal.
Nothing against triggers or samples, just think its so over used today that it starts sounding like a drum machine and not like a real drummer. Which is a shame.
Hope you enjoy!

Yeah, not bad.
*retrieves jaw from floor*
AWESOME sound Hugo, I love that tight fat sound with no ring. Great playing, excellent pedal work. Top job mate.

I'll second that.

Tight! I like the floor toms panned to the sides, especially when you syncopate them.

It's become a lost art to play live drums, period.
The most glaring example of which is in modern R&B/soul/whatever the record biz is calling it this week.
People forget that those samples came from artists who learned how to tune drums, what sticks to use, where to put each stroke of every beat, when to pound nails into the wall, and when to shut up and whisper. We need more of that.
Metal isn't my genre, but I can tell you're dedicated and thoroughly talented. Bravo to you, sir.
That's one beautiful kit man...and worth your playing. Did enjoy indeed!
Thanks Sammy!

Couldn't agree more.
Thank you! Yes, I like the panning too. And they work well together and create a nice low end.

Thank you for your comment! Maybe one day people will get back to using real drums more often! Finger crossed!

Drums sound great. What did you do to get that snare sound? I'm trying to get something similar but I'm not getting it. I'm also like you and don't want to use any triggers or anything. A real drum sound is where it's at.

Thank you!
There's some key factors in play here: Snare quality, snare tuning and the way I hit the snare.
In these Metal type genres, I hit hard and many times use rim shots, so that is a big key to getting this type of sound.
cheers

Enjoyed--- but! -- considering the mention of drum machines,i will offer a friendly drum off!!
Man v machine! are you 'up for it'?!?
Am rea lly curious to know, where do you feel your limits reach? is it speed, duration,or accurate timings // overall?
For eg-would you say there's a tempo you can not drum for 3mins straight?
Do you find 4 limbs>limiting?

Although I can go pretty fast, I can't reach those 250bpm type speeds yet. But honestly, I don't really care about speed. The most important thing to me is feel, sound and musicality. But hey, everyone has there limits!
But what I meant about being a shame that a lot of records sound like drum machines is more towards the people who have the conditions to record real drums and just take the easy way out and trigger and sample everything. Mainly in the Metal genre.
Again, nothing against drum machines or drum software. Hell, I use drum software all the time to compose and scratch out ideas. Its a godsend!
Cheers
Hugo

Thanks for reply HugoRibeiroDotCom.
Yes,i also find what you describe quite strange-capable performers switching to triggers and samples> I quess it's all about tonal ranges here.
I could not quite figure why great drummers go buy the digital kits, again overall,i guess that's for tonal variety, not an actual 'more hands, more legs' thing.
So maybe it is now___ machine=2,man=0. ? (an old virtual dj-off still counts!)
Dj'n/turntabalizmz, was 1 of the trickiest things I found to emulate well, drums are much simplier, technique wise. =)
Have you ever thought of directing your technique to a keyboard/keys//finger drumming style? 10 digits to play with there dude!!
Enjoyed this posted session anyways-tyvm.

Been a drummer for 20 years and play metal as well, that I understand =). I'm more talking about did you do anything in reaper with EQs etc.? I'm still fairly new to recording on my own and using reaper. I've got my kit sounding pretty good except my snare. I'm using a Pearl Reference snare. The snare sounds awesome to my ear but when it comes to recording I'm not getting the same sound. I've tried moving the mic in different spots and using a bottom mic but I'm stumped on getting that sound.

Well, digital kits, triggers etc... have their place. Its more of an aesthetic sound type thing.
Some mix them with acoustic drums and use digital pads for embellishments.

I don't use the stock plugins often. I use the Waves SSL plugins to mix my kit.
The trick for a good snare sound is to crank the bottom head pretty tight and then you can do whatever you want with the top head.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

All super punchy. The bass drum didn't have that much low end, but maybe that's youtube because the rest of the music didn't have much either, or maybe that's the sound you were going for? I'm not up on modern metal.
Awesome drumming though, I love looking at how the heads wear to see how accurate a drummer is
Hey HugoRibeiroDotCom-how many mics you running with that setup there?
Do you find mixing the tracks `easy` in reaper?
A machine can never put on a performance like a human can, although this video is quite beautiful I find> best of all worlds here-- it's live, quite genius engineering, and a heap of tones are produced.
Just great!

Yea that's how I have my snare tuned as well. I'll have to check into that Waves Plugin. thanks

Amazing video!
I usually have 12 mics simultaneously: Kick In, Kick out, Snare Top & Bottom, 4 toms, 2 Overheads, Hihat and Room mic.
I have a template already made for my kit and adjust the mix according to the music.
