My chain would typically look like:

GTune
ReaGate
Blockfish if I'm going for a cleaner tone, just to get the levels even
TSE 808
Amp sim
Cab sim
FerricTDS to remove a bit of the digitalness
Reaxcomp to keep the bass in check
ReaEQ

I like to keep it simple.

1. Good Hi-Z input (One the presents the correct Impedance to the pickups. This is Really important)
2. Good PreAmp (I use the UAD API Vision Channel strip.)
3. S-Gear
4. Great Tone

first, clean up the track (great sounding noise reduction).

everything else depends on the sound i´m going for. can be:
- low/hi-cut before and after the amp
- EQ before and after the amp
- comp before and after the amp
- reverb/delay after
- my "secret magic" room VST
- some console at the very end of it all

didn´t use an exciter on guitars yet.

i often have 8 tracks for a single guitar take, as i regularly use 2 amps with 2 cabsims each (for just one recorded guitar track).

Guitar > optional analog pedals > saffire 24
melda Mtuner
Satson
TSE 808
Distorque rangebastard
S-gear (noisegate, modulation, reverb, delay and cab sims all built in)

Optional
TB reelbuss post S-gear. S-gear doesnt have any fizz to tame. This just makes the sound more polished and up front.
Compressors pre or post: Stillwell rocket, DC1a, ThrillseekerLA
Modulation pre or post: Distorque azurite, TAL, melda freebies, leslie sims
Delay pre or post: Readelay, ET301, NastyDLA, TAL, Bionic delay

JS noisegate takes out the hiss from my old LP Custom through high gain settings. I leave the top fader as is [default] and the other three hard left, works very well.

Here's something simple that sounds very good

Guitar
LePou LeXTAC
Reverberate LE (Kalthallen Cabs Impulse)

Use the amp controls and the reverb EQ to taste.

Very low latency great sound

I add Blue Cat Audio Chorus and/or Line 6 Delay on another Reaper track as effects

Thats a REALLY nice analog chain.

I'm curious...why the 1176 into the interface? I could see it for clean tones to keep the transients in check. I do that ITB. But One of the coolest things about S-gear is its touch sensitive/dynamic distortion tones which i feel might be compromised by an always on compressor.

Or maybe you just use it as limiter to keep your interface from overloading?

Vacuumsounds ADT - Artificial Double Tracking

The ADT technique was developed at Abbey Road Studios by engineers recording the Beatles in the 1960s. To free John Lennon from having to sing everything twice for real double tracking they came up with an artificial replacement: they sent the original signal to another tape machine and re-recorded it. Due to the physical distance between record and playback heads the new signal was delayed. The length of the delay depends on the tape speed (the slower the tape is running the longer it takes for the signal to travel from the record to the playback head). However, due to the machine's (small amounts of) Wow and Flutter the delay time was not fixed but varied slightly, giving an additional chorus-like effect.
The ADT Plug-In takes a mono input signal and creates a stereo output. The original input signal will be output on one channel, the new ADT signal on the other. Blending the two is also possible. The Plug-In allows to control the delay time (10 - 50ms), Wow and Flutter (both with intensity in % and frequency). All values are based on the technical data of the tape machines that was originally used to create this effect. Take a look at a screenshot.

Neither, since I own a Kemper

These days my amp sim presets only get used if we're out of town and I've just got my guitar --> interface --> laptop going.

Before: nothing. After: loads...

1. Some kind of preamp and character EQ, either some Nebula libraries or Waves REDD or Scheps.

2. Surgical EQ, usually Equilibrium, but ReaEQ is also pretty decent.

3. Compression, mostly Waves CLA-LA2A.

4. Sidechain compression, usually ReaComp triggered by the kick drum.

5. On solos, Echo. Soundtoys Echoboy. No contest.

6. Sometimes Reverb: Nebula with whatever lib that sounds good. Maybe a real room, like the free RoomHunters lib, maybe a spring or plate. Often no reverb at all.

7. Whacky stuff: Auraplug Whamdrive is a free Whammy Pedal sim. Sound great. Can come anywhere in the signal chain depending on what I feel like and what I want to do.

I read somewhere that amp sims kind of fart out at some point on the gain knob and that we should put an overdrive pedal sim before the amp. Do you guys think that it really works better?
