What are some of your favourite guitar solos?
There are so many songs where the guitar solo is elevated from being a musical diversion to being part of what makes a great song what it is. What are some of your favourite solos? Any that stick with you to such a degree, that you can sing them out loud and remember every subtle nuance the player expressed?
This one continues to give me chills, even though I've heard it hundreds of times over many, many years. The tone, the expression, the phrasing, the patterns, the note choices... all nothing short of absolute perfection in my opinion.

Gilmours solos are really geared towards the average listener which is an art in itself. Many guys can display their prowess with fancy licks and speed riffs, but you really need some resemblance of a melody for a Guitar solo to become as famous as a vocal hook line.
Money is my favorite from him.
I have so many I love from guys like Eric Johnson, Hendrix, Van Halen, etc.
BUt one old unfamous solos was Steve Howes Intro solos on Yours Is no Disgrace, and all through the song his guitar parts, well at least when I was without pubic hair, was really a new style and sound. Definately affected me, and the bands songs were so different compared to every other group out back then...
There is one more recently that never gets much air play but was the Guitar Solo in a CHuck Mangione song I can't remember the name of, but that guy put a lifes worth of knowledge into 32 bars of perfection. His name was Grant Geissman, thats a name I wont forget. I think the song was Feels So Good, but there were no vocals, probably why I remember it as the guitar solo from Mangiones Band.

There are so many great guitarists out there, sadly, most of them stay unknown. I disdain pure shredders, so I tend to stay away from most guitar-solo genres (after having played in some progressive/hard rock and metal bands myself). However, I still admire the pre-2000 John Petrucci. Such great and delicate guitar work... my favourite has to be his Lines in the Sand solo. Such great tone, such great buildup, so much emotion in that one. Still makes me smile.

Joe Satriani's solo on Rubina from the live album Time Machine. Chills all the way.

Definitely agree!
Petrucci can be truely epic when he has the patience to play slow =)

this is so gonna be lounged
but anyways here goes :
Submission - Fields of the Nephilim (a study in pure emotion and whammy abuse)
Cold fire - Rush (lifeson inverts more rock conventions)
Hey Joe (live) - Roy Buchanan (just timeless and outdoes the original artist's live versions, no mean feat)
Reeves Gabrel's amazing licks and little solo type things from Bowie's Outside (is that cheating??)

I really like it when the solo takes the song to really different place melodically. Henry McCullough's solo in Paul McCartney's My Love is like that. Its simply a solo over the verse and chorus but to me it always sounded like the song goes off in another musical direction...

A totally overlooked genius was Terry Kath. Maybe because Chicago was a "horn band" so they never got the "rock" attention, but everyone of these guys are (were) true musicians. (I have seen the charts and their songs are HARD). We are talking 1970 people, no effect pedals or processing even existed back then (just a crybaby wahwah) plugged directly in. The video is not great camera wise, but the fact that it sounds so good with how simple the audio is (as demonstrated at the beginning of the video) says it all. The solo starts at about 2:30.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzimwJVhQRE
There are zillions more from Terry that are out there before his tragic death in 1978. Jimmy Hendrix was quoted that Terry was a better guitar player than he was. If he was still alive I guarantee he would be top 10 of all time.

Terry Kath is/was the KING!! Him and John Scofield have always been major influences on how I approach soloing and phrasing.

If you haven't listened to Terry Kath before, definitely check out "Chicago Transit Authority" (Chicago's first album).
Another great guitarist whose career was cut tragically (and stupidly... "don't worry the gun's not loaded" ) short.

for me it doesn't get any better than the soloing on In Memory of Elizabeth Reed from the Live at Fillmore East album. Pat Metheny's acoustic lead solo on the 80/81 album I think the second of two folk songs is also a favorite, incredibly heartfelt and lyrical

Also, from the same album, the song Nevermore has a great instrumental section where the guitar and keys trade some incredible licks. Talking about performing on a synthesizer! Both, keys and knobs are played to the song's benefit.

The coda from Pink Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond on 1977-07-02 at MSG - this is after Rick's keyboard solo had been hijacked in the arrangement by Dave and Snowy. That opening bit he played over the piano. This particular one just kills me every time.
For composition only (it was never performed well that I've heard - especially not in the studio version), the last solo in the coda of Yes' Ritual. (And if anyone's ever heard Steve pull this one off please PM me the date of said show!!)

I don't know where to start, there are so many.
Probably most things by Jeff Beck, Robben Ford, Paul Kossoff and Dave Gilmour
Favourite specific solos are:
Steve Vai: Big Trouble from Dave Lee Roth's 'Eat Em and Smile' album
Nuno Bettencourt: Get The Funk Out from Extreme's 'Pornograffitti' album.
Coincidentally, I had to play a couple of my favourite solos for the first time at recent gigs, which were
1) Eddie Van Halen's solo on Beat It, which I had to play for the first time at a gig a few weeks ago. Probably the hardest solo I've ever had to learn and play live.
2) Larry Carlton's solo on Kid Charlemagne, which I had to play for the first time live at a gig last Saturday.
Jeff Skunk Baxter's solo on Pretzel Logic is also a favourite, which I often play at gigs. But I got a bit over confident and forgot it the last time I tried to play it and had to improvise.
Markus Albert (Moio on this forum): Quantum Cheesecake on his Les Nuits Blanches EP (link below), which he originally posted on this forum.
http://markusalbert.bandcamp.com/
All of the late Alan Murphy's solos on the first Go West album. I also used to see him play in a fusion band called SFX on the London pub circuit. Probably the most exciting player I've seen live. There are a couple of solos from 2:09 and 4:00 in the Go West clip below.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLh51rZBT3A
Guthrie Govan's playing on Bad Asteroid. which very much reminds me of Alan Murphy with SFX

Same as with many others, I could name hundreds of albums full of great solos, singling best out of them feels almost impossible. Also, to me featuring guitar heavy and instrumental songs feels almost like cheating if we are talking about usual songs rather than solo instrumentals, but can't help myself so here are few of my favorites anyway.
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower. All three of them.
Jimi Hendrix - Machine Gun (Live at the Fillmore East, 2nd night). From the first sustaining scream to the last faint whammied note, ecstasy.
Eric Clapton - While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Yes it does.
Eagles (Don Felder & Joe Walsh) - Hotel California.
Lynyrd Skynyrd (Allen Collins, Gary Rossington) - Free Bird.
Toto (Steve Lukather) - Lovers In The Night. Both solos are good, but I especially like how the 2nd one rocks.
Frank Marino - Stories Of A Hero.
Judas Priest (Glen Tipton) - Beyond The Realms Of Death.
Dire Straits (Mark Knopfler) - Brothers In Arms
David Gilmour - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (today)
Bruce Springsteen (Nils Lofgren) - Youngstown (Live in NYC 2000)
Thin Lizzy (Scott Gorham) - The Sun Goes Down.
Gary Moore - The Loner (Live In Stockholm 1987). Fifteen minutes of heaven.
Eddie Van Halen - Down In Flames (live 78)
Andy Taylor (& Steve Jones) - I Might Lie. Especially the outro is great.
Q5 (Rick Pierce) - Steel The Light. Floyd Rose in the band, literally.
TNT (Ronni Le Tekrø) - Caught Between The Tigers
Queensryche (Chris DeGarmo) - Jet City Woman
Eric Johnson - High Landrons
Joe Satriani - The Crush Of Love (GP flexi-disc 87)
Glen Kuykendall - Sundown (GP flexi-disc 90)
Michael Lee Firkins - Rain In The Tunnel
Terje Rypdal - If Mountains Could Sing
Shawn Lane - Epiloque For Lisa
Vinnie Moore - Cryptic Dreams
Jake E. Lee's live solo performance in the middle of Suicide Solution in the BATM tour 1984. Probably not something you'd whistle along with, but for a flashy rock guitar solo it's a great piece.
Steve Vai - Bad Horsie (Live at the Astoria). For me the feedback solo in the middle is pure atonal beauty.

Best ever: Duane Allman "Dreams"
Honorable mention: Robbie Krieger "Light my fire" - pure, beautifully composed simplicity. Totally underrated for his influence imo.

In no particular order:
David Gilmour - Fletcher Memorial Home
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqonCo0A68o
As close as I can be moved to tears by an instrument. I wish I could evoke feeling like this from a guitar. Once again proving that you also hafta play the spaces between the notes.
Steve Vai - Oooo (particularly 3:07)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iM5s8LY3QAI
This is a much overlooked piece from Steve. You can here Zappa all over this and Vai is deliberately responsible for my love of all things lydian.
Ty Tabor - Moan Jam
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHALHZjmG6k
Ty has to be the most underrated guitarist on the planet and his tone is perfect. I love this solo because Ty goes apeshit which he rarely does. Love the way it devolves into an air raid siren.
Tosin Abasi - Tempting Time
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lrwYPhHThc
It'd been a loooong time since my jaw had dropped from someones playing. Tosin is the new king of the hill and he's the best there is today... no but's about it.
My jaw dropped a second time when I actually saw him playing it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt8IwLeFM38
Devin Townsend - Deep Peace
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tFCxB_L4Bo
If I could cop anyones "style" it'd be Devy. He makes everything sound so huge and epic.
Frank Zappa - Watermelon in easter hay
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hb2nCXR6KBU
No need to explain. Its brilliant start to finish.

Jimi Hendrix, "The wind cry's Mary" solo has always stoped me in my tracks, such feel.
And Gary Moore's solo in "still got the blues", wow.

Hear hear. Gretchen Goes To Nebraska and Faith, Hope, Love got some play here. I remember this summer tour from 10 years ago, King's X with Dream Theater and Satriani. That was quite special night.

Steve Morse - Highland Wedding(starts @ 1:53) (album: High Tension Wires)
Steve Vai - Rescue Me or Bury Me (starts @ 2:53) (album: Sex and Religion)...IMO he has a ton of incredible solos, but this one sticks in my head for some reason.
Any Satriani
Any Pat Metheny
