So I'm Having A Static issue
Hey everyone, I have a serious issue.
So, for some reason I'm getting in my projects a static on my master track, and when I add a limiter or a compressor to it, there's actually a decent amount of gain that shows on the level (picture reference below). Never had this issue until today. Running the latest version of Reaper (and happened still on a previous version of Reaper, thought maybe updating it would fix it). Using a late 2014 Mac Mini running OS X 10.11.6 (haven't updated that in a while), and using a Sternberg UR44 audio interface with all the latest updates. But the weird thing... I can turn off my audio interface and use just the Mac as my "audio unit" and I still get the issue. I have no idea if somehow something in my computer got corrupted or not. I'd hate to do a hard reset, but if need be I can backup all my projects and try it. The clock source hasn't changed, there's nothing armed that causing this, and I only get the static read on the master channel.
Better yet, if I bounce a file, the static gets bounced as well. It's definitely coming from somewhere, yet I have no clue what it could be.
If anyone has a clue as to why this is, please help and it is very appreciated. I have a client that we're trying to put a single out next week, and this is a serious issue.

Mmh, might a plugin on one of the tracks cause this?
What if you create a new project with only one track and do a mic recording without using any plugins? Is the noise still there?
If yes, it might help to isolate the source of the issue, to buy a cheap USB HDD and do a clean install of OSX and Reaper on that HDD and see if the problem persists, when you boot from that HDD. If yes, it's a hardware issue ... maybe an interference captured by the Steinberg?
PS: But because the internal soundcard has the same issue ... does the Mac Mini run on a SSD or a HDD? I vaguely remember, that I had a similar issue with my old Vaio, when recording guitar. I needed at least 1 meter distance to the laptop to avoid that and I never found out, if it was caused by the HDD or the fan.

Google for "Mac Mini audio interference" to find many reports about similar issues. The origin of such issues can be pretty different, from grounding issues up to installing Chrome and Flash ... the later being most astonishing.

Had a static issue myself recently I blamed the clothes I was wearing while playing bass at first (acrylics etc).
Then I thought after a few days that maybe it was something to do with the bass and also the clothes I was wearing.
Noticed that after about 10 years or so the plastic on the back panels of the JAZZ BASS were peeling off.
I thought ah.... grabbed some copper sheet which I thought would be still hanging around in a hundred years, ripped the remaining plastic wrap of the
battery panel and electronics plus pots panel then swathed them in a layer of copper foil.
No more static....
Probably not what you were after but true none the less. I was worried....
Pleased I found the answer in days not months.

Here's where it gets interesting. These projects we're from a while ago and I had no static noise when I recorded them. I've been mixing them for months perfectly fine, then all of a sudden yesterday it just comes up. And for years I've had my interface and computer nearly side by side without any issue. It's almost like my computer did an update behind my back that caused all of this. And it runs on an HDD. I should mention as well I have no tracks armed or any mic's plugged in and I'm getting the static noise. It might be a ground loop, but I have no clue where it would be coming from. I might look into some of my programs like flash and see if they're causing the issue.
Edit: So I just figured out the problem... I know it had to be something stupid. I have the CLA 2A compressor from Waves and I left the analog option on, which of course gave that analog static sound and when I put a compressor and limiter on the master channel, it amplified that drastically. Thankfully there isn't any serious issue. Thank you all for the help though... I'm gonna go put a dunce cap on now... ^_^
