Default question about reaper's project file format

I've never used reaper, but am thinking of giving it a try. I'm used to using sonar, and there's something I want to do but can't because sonar's project file format is binary and proprietary. Does Reaper have a text based project file? Thanks!

Yes, it does, and it's quite simple to understand too!

Yes it has. Why dont you just not download it and give it try. The RPP file (project file) is readable with a text editor.

Awesome, thanks. Also thanks for the quick responses. Looks like Reaper's forum is pretty good. I'm definitely going to give it a try.

One thing to also note...The project files that you get when saving a real project may look quite complex and have lots of things. However, if you want to write/edit the project file yourself with a program/script, there are many things you can simply omit from dealing with, Reaper will use suitable default values for many things.

Indeed, I seem to recall Pipeline telling us a story about Justin changing the mix of a song in a text editor, just to show off a bit to another recording engineer.

I love how rpp's are just text files. I've gone into them and did global replaces on paths and such.

For the most part the rpp is self-explanatory. But is there a 'key' anywhere to the rpp, that tells what each block/line/etc is?

On the other hand, those text files can add up to quite a large bulk if you have a lot of tracks and VSTs loaded.

It wouldn't be a bad idea if those RPP files could be zipped, and then have a new extension (RPZ - RPP ZIP?) - ZIP archives are easy to treat like directories, and there's definitively good compression ration using ZIP on text files.

I might put this in a FR at some date.
