Default How to play an audio item?

Sometimes I want to quickly listen to an audio item to see what it does without having to solo the track and all that.

Is there a way I can just [modifier] click or key on an audio item and have it play?

Basically I don' want to have to play the whole project. Sort of like media explorer but just on that item and just play it in the background.

You can do it installing the SWS/S&M extension,
look for SWS/BR: Preview media item under mouse (lots of different versions, see action list)
It is really nice
I like to use the one (at track fader volume and start under mouse position)

Not the same, but related: change the default Arrange View - Middle drag function in mouse modifiers to Jog audio (looped-segment mode), and you can drag with your mousewheel button along an item and hear the contents at whatever speed you drag at. This is great for locating sections in an item.

Thanks, jog doesn't work to well since it plays at whatever rate you drag at, and I can never get that right.

There is a good sws extension thought that does pretty much exactly what I want... it just doesn't have a corresponding way to stop the sound easily? (e.g., if you use the modifier/action to play the item, clicking again with same hotkeys should stop the playback.

I had to create a cycle action(actually two) so that I could click and play or stop depending on state. Kinda a pain but seems to work as I wanted.

The preview item is great. I don't like the toggle method much though.

Is there a way to configure reaper instead to play the SWS preview when holding mouse on item?

That is one thing I used to like about DP. Just hold mouse on item and it previews.

Actually assigning the § key to sws preview media item does the trick.

Then it is 'point and press §' which is almost as quick as mouse down.
