To me, these look a lot like they were modeled on the Retro Instruments which are very high quality modern clones of the STA (Mk1), the 176 (Mk 2) and then the Doublewide (Mk 3) which is a modern 500 series take on the Variable gain tube compressor

The colors and even the logo and font he is using in the VST on the simulated VU meters look like they are ripped straight from Retro Instruments.
These are great hardware comps and so if the modeling is good would be nice comps. And it makes sense to use them as models since they are only a couple of grand each vs like $50k for a vintage STA or Vari-Mu (if you can find one at all)

The demos to me sound a little cartoonish, but VST demos often do because the manufacturers tend to want to wow you with effect and so over do the heck out of pushing the simulated inputs and outputs.

If I was a VST user I'd give these a go.... but I'm going to content myself with using this

That actually looks like a pretty nice plugin. I already have a few other Klanghelm VSTs that I like so this looks like a no-brainer for the price. Thanks for posting.

My resistance failed.

The CPU thing looks like denormal issues to me. I've got it sitting idle, MK3 in mono, with HQ off and it's showing around 53% CPU. When I hit play it drops to 4.5%.

Lovely plugin though.

edit: yeah, GNormal fixes the CPU munch (level at -320dB, pulse or square seems best)

It was updated today:

Quote:
07/24/15 - version 1.0.1
- better GUI alignment, some minor GUI fixes such as adding a missing label near the SCF knob in Mk3
- reduced CPU load when using the plugin's internal bypass
- when used on stereo channels, GR-meter now shows the gain reduction of the stereo sum instead of left channel only
- FIX: default state gets recalled properly now in ProTools
- FIX: occasional erratic VU-needle-behavior
- FIX: OSX: 64-bit AU didn't pass AU-validation on some systems
- FIX: latency is reported properly now
- FIX: Windows: denormal issues in the Windows 32bit VST-version, when using Mk3
- FIX: Windows: when saving a default state, GUI didn't show up on some systems when loading a new instance
- FIX: Windows: MJUC didn't show up on some systems
Amazing plug indeed

lake still gets low in winter, not, as low as years past as alcoa, who leases the basin, has different rules for lake levels, now.....

FWIW theres a mega thread over at slutz

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/new-...-released.html

Its an almost unanimous love fest which is pretty rare for GS. Usually there's at least some dissension.

On the other hand there was plenty of backbiting in the "OMG I cant wait!" part of that particular debacle.

Its only a plug but blimey thy know how to whine on GS, dont they?

I've installed the free version but it isn't showing up in Reaper. I tried this when it first came out, then tried again after the update recently. Still doesn't work.

I'm on Windows XP. Anyone else have these problems?

I'm still on XP and have only half of your problem.

The first release V1.0.0 works on my computer, however it has a denormal problem ( which is fixed with normalizer or similar ) but it also uses about 10% cpu per instance.
The latest version 1.0.1 doesn't show up on my system at all.

Its a ahame as it sounds really good and the latest version has some cpu improvements.

I have emailed to Tony and he has done a custom compile for XP ( Paid version MJUC ) for a customer and he says if it works ok he might put it up in the user area.

But he also said it would be way too much work to have a fully suported XP version of MJUC as some of the new features i beleive only work in newer versions of windows.

Have to wait and see.

Cheers

Thursday, July 30, 2015

Quote:
MJUC jr. has been updated to version 1.0.1, which includes various fixes and stability/compatibility improvements for older Windows versions.

The big brother has been updated too. DENSITY and ISTAGE now trigger the AGC calculation too. The update also features the same compatibility improvements as MJUC jr.

I've never realized what a "color" compressor can do until now. This thing can really change the tone of a sound, like an EQ if you want it to. So THAT's what all the high-paid guys are talking about.

I can't believe there are three of them either.

MJUC needs Visual C++ 2010, too. If it´s not installed yet, download it here:

This plugin is literally unbelievable for the price. In the same league as high-end software.
Astounding quality and 100% usability. To my ears, it sounds like expensive hardware. The free version is also 100% usable, and is by no means a cut-down of it's parent. It stands on its own.

There are actually 4. The freebie (Jr.) is its own thing. The Jr. is probably the most colored especially since you have no control over the coloring elements. They get less colored with each MK... with MK3 being the cleanest if you leave the density and interstage off. Some are using MK3 for mastering and it seems to be the fave for mix buss.

Between MJUC, Rocket, Kotelnikov and Reaper, I think I'm covered in the compressor department.

When I do analog recording/mixing, I'm limited to what I physically have in the studio. We are so spoiled in the digital area! It's great, but I try to keep things simple and use only what's needed. MJUC is slowly becoming my main compressor. It's so versatile.

Just a rank amateur in this arena, but those are exactly my top choices after reviewing many more. Focusrite provided Red3 Comp for me recently and it is added for sure.

I add DC8C2 to your list. Its my default track comp in easy mode. I never even touch the expert mode unless I find a preset that works. I dont use reacomp except for sidechain duties.

Also SKnote has a distressor clone coming out later this year that I am looking forward to.

I love this thing! I really feel that my quest for compressors is finally over. With this and Kotelnikov I am pretty much covered. Rest of the stuff can gather virtual dust on my DAW

Amazing plugin and so affordable too. Sweet.

So now that the initial thrill has had some time to cool off, is it still as awesome as you guys were saying?

Was considering getting Major Tom and The Rocket today and maybe this as well, but should I really be spending $75 on 3 more compressors that I could totally get by without?

quickie for yous knowledgeable guys

In the compressors rundown over, dat guy mentions reducing the gain of the MU to increase compression ratios...

I rushed to my MUjr but no gain and I don't see it on big brother. Makeup gain is different, isn't it? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I haven't used MUjr much, can't really comment but I have used Kotelnikov a few times. Nice. But a for a horse of a different colour I use Molot... a lot. Especially on busses.

Got all jazzed up on MJUC hype, and very cheap to sort out. Used Jr a bit and my take is .... another tool to use as it may fit. Open to hear how it is more than a different variable-mu Compressor to use when it seems to fit.

Yea Molot's definitely growing on me. Forced me to bone up on my technical knowledge, since it was pretty overwhelming at first.

Dongle is just another choice. Works fine for some.
What more can be said for MJUC that helps define it .... maybe some actual analysis. Where it shines and where it does not. Or is it just superb at everything.

What I did was, I downloaded the SM Drum Project here, and I have to say while I'm not too impressed with the drum sounds*, the project itself was a great learning curve. Made me realise that I was doing a lot wrong! Kudos to the guys involved!

Then I grabbed a 30 minute long MIDI drum track with full kit and dragged it into the project and muted the Sequencer.

I worked on each instrument gate/comp/eq then bussed them into Molot. Hours and hours of lovely tweaking. And I'd say it what the SM kit needs. Ducks and runs for cover!

Sorry for going OT.

Any thoughts from people also using NI Vari-Comp? I imagine the other models here can get a lot dirtier...

I think the short manual answers the interstage details.

For sidechain you have to hit the little down arrow at the bottom of the GUI and then rotate the SCF knob.

The manuals explanation doesnt tell me enought about the uses of interstage and i still have no idea what sidechain does here. Am i supposed to feed a signal into it ?
