Fathom's wavetable oscillator sounds pretty cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVgZ...ature=youtu.be

After the kinks are worked out, I think it will be a nice soft synth, despite my earlier complaint of modular soft synths not working together, which was a general comment not aimed at Fathom specifically. I think that Fathom could eventually make for a nice beginner synth. But maybe it is already has too many parameters for that.

At least things are progressing in a modular direction, which is very cool.

Just undock them from the FX window and arrange them on the screen to suit (helps if you have two monitors).

To have them all in one interface, you have an extra layer of software which creates the walled system that we're trying to avoid. As it is, ReaRack modules can work with any other FX, regardless of whether they are designed for ReaRack. It's all a compromise.

IMHO, on the contrary, this is rather appropriate, especially given the initial issue of the forum thread. This allows for combining ReaRack modules with other VSTs.

Using a versatile independant "macro" feature that can "visually" combine multiple plugins (JSFXes and VSTs, and macro-modules themnselves) in a "module" (as discusses several times in theses forums) seems like a very good idea to be used with ReaRack, though.

+1

I'm not a musician, just an occasional dabbler but getting hold of Serum was a revelation. At last I could actually see and understand what the components were doing in real time and even start to design my own sounds.

Someone just let me know about VCVRack. A free virtual modular. Looks pretty awesome

That looks like the best thing I've seen to really get to know how synthesis works.

My first synth was a PAIA patch bay synthesizer kit like this, and learning with the basic building blocks taught me so that when I got my hands on a MiniMoog, or my old Oberheim TVS, I knew before tweaking what the various parameters would do to the sound.

EDIT: OK, I downloaded this virtual modular synth, and right off the bat I'm remembering the concept of control voltages and signal routing. With four modules, I constructed a quick patch using "MIDI to CV", a VCO, a VCA, and "Audio Driver".

I guess this thing doesn't show up in REAPER if I were to construct the most fabulous patch ever created. Oh well, it's still fun. Thanks for posting the link!

Looks interesting, but I don't like stuff where you have to register just to try it out.

Another one to try (if it wasn't mentioned earlier) is Kamioooka (https://www.kvraudio.com/product/kamioooka-by-g200kg)

Very intuitive as a free easy-to-learn modular synth.

I didn't have to register VCVRack, and I have it up and running behind my web browser right now.

Hehe, I've advanced with it to an eight module synth with 2 ADSRs controlling a VCA and a VCF. It's pretty fun and will teach you stuff about synthesizers that a pre-wired synth, virtual or real will not.

The one you posted looks pretty cool too.

I think maybe you missed the 3 download buttons at the top of the website?

Thanks—I must have misinterpreted the web page.

I saw the download buttons, but It said something about registering (for free) in order to install and use the software. I’ll give it another look tonight—maybe that was for an advanced mode.

Although I really should spend time with the Arturia VC6 bundle I got for Black Friday — the Moog modular is lots of fun!
