I had my loft converted a few years ago and got a carpenter mate to build a desk for me. It's made out of birch-faced ply; the design is pretty simple but does the job. I have some rack units on castors which fit nicely either side.

There's also plenty of space for my pedal boards, work laptop, mic cases, etc.

Sorry about poor images...

Ha! Luckily my days of boiling strings and tying snapped ones together are over - probably only replace each set every six months (on average) though.

I wouldn't be using anything other than coated strings in your case.

...in fact, I'm a big fan of Elixirs over here precisely because they are so long-lasting

Thanks for the tip, will try them. I've generally just stuck to what I've known - D'Addario and Ernie Ball.

I'm sorry, you just have too many guitars. You're going to have to send some of them to me.

Looks very pleasant to work in Geir Always good to have a window to look out of as well - looks quite idyllic with the snow outside. How do you find the sloping ceilng (or is it just sloping sound treatment?) as regards acoustics? A friend of mine, way back, had more or less the same set-up. It made things sound 'closer' iirc (it was a good 15 years ago).

It's actually just the Korg MS-20 midi controller, sadly not a proper analog synth. Good fun; shame they went for little keys though.

It's been interesting seeing the various studios / desks, so here's my humble, ever so slightly re-purposed IKEA computer desk.

Since I work almost exclusively in MIDI, I don't need much, even to "record" drums or a full orchestra.

Pictures of my studio ... there are two desks, one large and very heavy L shaped desk that has my keyboards, music DAW, midi controller for Reaper, and another lighter desk to the right that has the Qcon controller for Pro Tools, sheet music, manuscript paper, etc. It's pretty tight but a nice setup. Additional music is on stands everywhere. You can't see the guitars in the picture, there are about 5 of them, acoustic and electric.

Third picture is view towards the kitchen and my day to day laptop computer (at which I'm typing this now).

It's an artist loft, in a former cotton mill, with 15 ft high ceilings, original hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, etc. Very cool place to live. Two pictures at bottom is what it looked like before I moved in, and a top view from the studio.

The phone is there so I can alert the media if I compose something brilliant. I haven't used it yet, but I remain hopeful.

The phone is old but not as old as the keyboard. That's a Korg M1. I also have a Yamaha Dx7IIFD. Generally I use old stuff 'till it stops working.

Nice area Peter! You were one of the first people I talked to about the Icon Qcon Pro. Now I've got a Qcon Pro and an Ex unit. Thanks for the input! Now I'm building a desk to incorporate it and that's why I started this thread! With the new 1.15 firmware, you don't even need templates using the Reaper setting on the unit. It follows the logic layout almost perfectly. Still have yours?

Thanks! Oh yeah ... if you look at the second picture you can see it, lit up and all, hooked up to Pro Tools. I've been thinking of getting one or maybe even two EX units but there's just enough space ... have to have a little bit of space to write music with pencil and paper.

Yeah, I saw your desk layout, that looks very cool. If you're good with tools and everything that should be a fun project. I know a couple of people who have designed and built their own studio desks -- it's a lot of work, bit too daunting for me. That big desk I bought from a couple of college students for $100 I believe, hard to go wrong at that price level.

Default The Sound Kitchen & more

I actually have the luxury of two rooms more or less dedicated to making music.

The newer one is called the "Sound Kitchen" and the room started life as a kitchen in a granny flat.

Here I create all of my electronica music (apart from the piano parts, for which I use my wife's piano in our living room). I'm also now using it quite a lot for recording the keyboard and even some direct guitar parts of my more pop/rock type songs.

During the day it sometimes moonlights as my office on my home office days.

The other studio is in the cellar and comprises a mixing console, lots of synth & effects racks, several keyboards (including a hardly used anymore Roland W-30), guitars and bass guitars, as well as all the music related junk that somehow came into my possesion in the past 30 odd years. Pride of place has my electronic drum set:

The rest of the room is less photogenic, as it is really mostly a rubbish heap, but I've started clearing it up a bit, so maybe another picture will follow at some point of the second half of the room. For now another pic of my drum corner:

Thanks!

Silar --- for inspiration you might also want to take a look at these guys, from Romania:

http://www.zaorstudiofurniture.com/

They do custom builds as well - including some I've seen where the mixer was built into the desk. Very affordable, by comparison to other commercially available studio desks.

I was initially quite hung up on getting a Zaor desk, but it ended up being too big for my space. Thankfully Buso Audio fit the bill quite nicely - and they're nice guys to do business with, to boot!

My current desk is just a simple one with an added glass plate to get the extension needed for keyboard + mouse as the mixing desk took the space, but what I'm particularly happy about is the flexible monitor extension arm which means I can have the screen really close to make things very easy to see and allows me to zoom out Reaper track panel for nice overview and still be able to work.

The arm swings up and back enough to make me access the mixer underneath, and also completely out of the way for proper listening, but as with most of my hardware they are anyway no longer in much use since I moved to the city flat. Even if I could set up a new room again, I much prefer ITB and headphones (the AKG sounds awesome). I am not even bothered with the 49 keyboard on the side anymore, but use the kid's mini 25 which is between the keyboard and mouse so that I can more easily switch between mouse and qwerty editing and playing/tweaking.

With another extension of the monitor arm, I am even tempted to move to a recliner chair setup with some gaming keyboard/thingie extension to the left armrest, and mouse pad on the right and the mini midi keyboard on the lap, and get rid of the desk completely.

It's not the best set of cymbals, but then I'm not the best drummer. It is so much better than using pad cymbals and with that and the mesh drums the feeling is pretty much like playing proper drums, while still tolerable for my neigbours.

I just like them, I have 4 in different rooms. The red light in the second image is not caused by the lava lamp, it wouldn't be strong enough. I also have an LED PAR light in the room, where I set the light tone that feels right for the moment. Blue & red with the orange lava lamp works well, as well.
