Hold Alt then drag the item to slip edit the audio content (I think it's Alt by default).
Please read the user guide

Sonar to Reaper USER GUIDE
and also:

For example, the default behavior of shift+control+drag on a media item is to copy the item while ignoring snap-to-grid. You can change this to any of 20+ other behaviors, including: moving the selected area of the item, adjusting pitch, moving the item contents, setting the time selection, doing nothing, and so on.
There are separate customizable contexts for dragging in the top vs. bottom half of a media item. By default, dragging in the bottom half is mapped to “pass through to media item context”, meaning that the behavior is identical when dragging in either the top or bottom half.
Any action (including custom actions) can be assigned to any double-click mouse modifier, in any context. If you want to, you can assign 32 different actions to be triggered when double-clicking the top or bottom of a media item, while holding different modifier keys.
Some of the behaviors are complex. For example, the default behavior when dragging a media item is to move the selected area of selected items if the drag begins within the time selection, and move all selected items if the drag begins outside the time selection. If you want to always move all selected items regardless of where the drag occurs (which is the old default behavior), use “Move item ignoring time selection.”
As another example, the default behavior when dragging the edge of a media item is to move the edge of all selected items that occur at the same timeline position. If you want to move the edges of all selected items regardless of timeline position, use “Move item edge ignoring edge time for selection.”
You can now copy blocks of automation with the mouse, using control+shift+alt+drag by default, but this can be mapped to any other key combination using Preferences/Editing Behavior/Mouse Modifiers.
There are also actions to change the default mouse action for any context. So, for example, you could switch the default media item drag behavior between “move item” and “move selected area of item” using a custom toolbar button.

This only allows me to drag the entire track, how would i be able to select only a portion on a track for editing? would i need to cut to make part selection?
In Sonar i was able to drag over the track & select a track part without moving the actual whole track but this was using an editing tool.

The whole track? I have no idea what you're doing wrong... By slip editing, you mean this, right?
This is Alt+click on the upper half on the item, and this is slip editing in Reaper's world.

I would like to drag over the track to select a small part for editing lets say without this moving the complete track..
Hope that makes more sense

Marquee editing?
Right-click drag to do such selections.
Would it be rude of me to point you to the excellent Reaper User Guide here? This is really a basic operation

I believe in Sonar it was called the Free Edit Tool.
I engaged the free edit tool & was able to click & drag the section i required which highlighted the area,I could then edit this in my audio editor.
Just to explain Right click is not doing this for me,im getting a lasso type of window opening which then disappears when i release the mouse..hmmm
Either way there's no going back to Sonar but i would like to get these Basic editing problems sorted
Im sure there is a basic solution which i don't see in the manual as yet.
Any Help is appreciated

It can some times be hard looking for what is not there...
You can't make such a selection inside a soundclip.
But of course there are lots of other ways of doing things.
(BTW it is one of the top feature requests.)

You can do that, but it will not look the same as in Sonar.
Go to Properties->Editing Behavior->Mouse Modifiers, select Context: Arrange view, right drag. Set "Default action" to "Marquee select items and time".
Now, you can select multiple items in a certain time selection, over multiple tracks if you want. Before that, install SWS extensions, and use this action as your default delete action: "SWS: Remove items/tracks/env, obeying time sel".
Now you will be able to clear only things surrounded by time selection and all items selected, for example.

It sounds to this noob like manley just wants to take, say, a 10 second item, and just edit the part from the 7 second mark to the 8 second mark. Dont know too much about that kind of stuff yet, but I would think you would have to split the item. Possibly multiple times. No?
And, yes, you want SWS. For many reasons.

Nope
I just wanted to be able to select any part of an audio track of whatever size big or small & copy this for editing..without having to cut i guess
Simple as that
As i said earlier this was easy in Sonar & wondered if i could do the same in Reaper no fuss..

Does p. 113 give you what you want?
I'm looking at the 4.20 guide. Might be more pages in the update.

Would splitting the media item (click at the desired location and press the S key) give you what you want?

Hey Thanks for the help
In short Yes splitting the audio does the job nicely!
I was thinking It Would have been a nice feature to highlight the audio section you want without having to split & open in the Audio Editor afterwards.
Also Yes Highlight the section & then use Copy selected area of items works aswell but takes alittle more time
Phew!!

Just use "Marquee Select Items and Time" (Option or Alt) + Right Drag to select the section of the items. Then just copy and paste. It helps to have "Mouse click/edit in track view changes track selection" turned on in the Preferences - Editing Behavior - Mouse.

I use the slice either side and slip method.two clicks and you're slipping.
Its very fast once you've done it for a few mins.
Its an amazing yoke.My backing vocals tracks became A LOT tighter when I sussed it out.

So are you still stuck?
BTW - I prefer "Marquee select items and time" over just "Marquee select items" so I changed it in the mouse modifiers so that I don't have to hit Alt. Just right drag.
Also, I wasn't using "copy selected area of items". Just straight copy.
