Default Forum upgrade on April 24, 2014 -- post any forum issues here

Hello all,

We've upgraded the forum server today, to a VM that has more RAM and power, and a more modern OS. If you see any new issues with the forum (emails not getting delivered, attachments not working right, and so on), please let us know in this thread!

Thanks,

Justin

Does this mean you went from Windows to Linux or from Linux to Windows?

Ubuntu 10.04 i686 to 14.04 x86_64 No Windows involved, just 4 years newer distribution (kernel goes from 2.6 to 3.x, too). Though our OpenSSL is now HeartBleed-affected, but we don't use SSL on this box...

Justin, probably this isn't the best place to have that discussion but since we're seeing a forum update I thought it would be nice to ask for Tapatalk support now that's free

Is it better in reducing spam? If so, how?

Tapatalk support would be really really nice.

Forum skin that fits the Reaper website would also be really really nice

Regarding spam, gotta have better/a bit tougher captchas and some questions for the user before he/she is even allowed registering.

Any plans regarding a tablet-friendly version?
And easier embedding of music-content?

Default vB5 and TT

I vote no on vBulletin 5. It's awful and I wouldn't be surprised if IB either goes under or sells vB. Since vB4 people have been leaving in droves.

vB3 is great, however and I highly recommend you stick with it if you can keep it secure. Wish I'd stayed on it.

A +1 for Tapatalk. Use it all the time and it's free for you to install, so why not?

I don't share the enthusiasm for Tapatalk. Even when I decline (typically twice), it tends to ask if I want to use it again after a little while. And if I get that from ten different forums, it starts to feel like malware.

It will only show once and never again once dismissed with the default settings as long as you haven't disabled cookies in your browser.
But, if the forum admin wants to disable the tapatalk banner all together, it's easy to do. However, for people like me who have Tapatalk installed, I appreciate the banner to let me know that the forum has Tapatalk installed and I can quickly add it.

There's really no reason at all to not add the app. I do a lot of my forum browsing using the app and I really like that it gives a consistent layout to every forum.

A "responsive" theme should do the trick. If they can find one, or make one.

Default Mobile friendly forum

As a previous lurker, I too, would like to see a more mobile friendly forum. I like Tapatalk and would be happy to see it implemented, but any more mobile friendly format would be appreciated. I most often browse this forum with my Android phone and have to enlarge the screen and scroll back and forth for my (admittedly) old eyes to see the messages without strain. Great forum overall, though.

Since this upgrade, whenever I want to preview a post or there is an error with an attached file, if I had written something it gets lost. It has happened to me a couple of times...

Pardon me but Slackware would of been my preferred choice instead of Ubuntu. Have not used Ubuntu for many years now. It got too bloated after 10.

Plus shoving Unity down on everyone's throat hurt Ubuntu badly.

I run Puppy Linux on a 512 meg flash drive ( emergencies only) and it boots off of any laptop, desktop or run it in a VM box. A full OS around 128 megs.

Still for Server stuff Slackware or FreeBSD

I don't know if it is related, but ever since the forum update I don't get any emails anymore letting me know that new posts were made to subscribed threads. That is really annoying.

Both would be really great. 30 private messages in total seems awfully little in this day and age. I don't want an alternative email account, but it would be nice to be able to keep older posts.

And for a music production forum it would be really useful to be able to embed music directly.

Check your UserCP, your thread subscription mode is set to "subscribe, no notification", AFAICT the update didn't change any subscription mode settings.

I´d like to remind that this can be really annoying... You can potentially lose everything you have written with a single click...(something which I have painfully experienced more than once)

Every frequent forum user knows that feeling, many resorted to writing their posts in Notepad etc., then c+p'ing (but generally this forum has a longer timeout than most other forums I visit.). Some browsers (e.g. Opera 12, alas development stopped) restore text in forms/edit fields/etc. when you use the navigation 'back' button (from the timeout/error message window), most don't.

Anyway, no (forum) software was updated or settings were (deliberately) changed, only the server it's running on was changed, so that probably has nothing to do with that migration.

Hi Ollie, thanks for the quick reply - I didn't know you could change the default thread subscription mode, which I now did. However, I normally always chose "instant email notification" when subscribing and although I might have missed that a couple of times I also didn't receive any emails for threads where in the past I did (and yes, I revisited them via the link in the email, thus re-triggering the notification). Well, let's wait and see :-)

Thanks.

First off, check if your email account is generally still working. Secondly, your email provider bounced forum emails from May 18th to 22nd with "554 5.0.0 Service unavailable".

This is often due to the receiving mail server thinking that the sent email is spam, but the bounce messages usually contain a hint about that and the messages we received don't. If your account is still working otherwise, contact your ISP about that or use some freemailer instead.

Thanks for the quick check. It seems that my current email address is blocked by my provider. I'm trying another one...

Thanks

I would appreciate the mobile theme for forum also. I was half way through a Stylish project but I lost it, but maybe I'll start it up again.
