Default Midi volume light is red, vsts not working

Hello!

I'm kind of new to Reaper, however, I've been able to successfully use vsts on midi files before. all of a sudden the vsts I attached to MIDI tracks are not working.

I have tried removing the vsts, moving the files to a different folder to no avail. I've also disabled the vsts for each track, removed them and added them again to no avail.

When I play back my project, all the midi tracks have a red volume light instead of the usual green. I'm not sure what's going on.

Has anyone seen this before?

These vsts were working fine last night but when I opened the project this morning they started behaving like this.

the red light indicates MIDI activity.
it's difficult to tell what's up with your set-up, maybe if you could post a pic of your channel that might help

Can you name some of the VSTs used in this case?

And is this a general problem. Or only with certain Projects or MIDI files?

Any specific error messages when opening the Project?

And is the problem the same when adding the VSTs in a new Project?

Have you also already tried doing a [Clear cache/re-scan] via Preferences > Plug-Ins > VST?

Do audio items play back OK?

When I have the exact problem you described, it almost always turns out to be that Reaper had disconnected from my audio interface. Closing/restarting Reaper solves the problem.

But if your audio items are playing back OK, then the problem is obviously something else ...

Have you converted the MIDI to audio files? VST's don't work on MIDI files but they do work on audio files.

Hmmm... well, most of my VSTs are driven by MIDI tracks - Kontakt, Xpand!2, SS Drums, Dimension Pro, for example

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I do not get errors when I open up the project. The issue is that there is no audio whatsoever coming from the Midi files (with VSTi's assigned) and the volume lights for those tracks are red, not green as usual.

One thing I noticed was that when the problem is occurring, the VSTi's UI dissappears and is replaced by reaper's generic UI whenever i try to go into any of those tracks to see the VSTI settings.

I have 4 midi tracks, 2 using DSK-Elektrik-Keyz VSTi(http://www.dskmusic.com) and 2 using Orchestral Strings One VSTi (got it on some free vst site). The problem happens when I add a new track and assign either of these 2 VSTi's to the track. If I do this then all the midi tracks crap out.

this does not affect the drum midi track (EZ Drummer 2).

The only Way i can get the VSTi's to work is by removing them from the track and adding them back.

I may chalk this up to shitty vst's but I like the sounds and didnt want to spend a bunch of money on synths.

If anyone has any suggestions for good, reliable synth and piano VSTI's let me know and I may just switch altogether.

Also look at the HUGE "Going all freeware (well almost) thread stickied on here.
Some GREAT free stuff out there.

The DSK stuff has always been flaky for me so I dumped it some time back.

+1 on DSK being flaky. Sooo many crashes trying to use that stuff.

Thanks guys, I ditched DSK and went with a different VSTi and no longer had these issues.
