Rock-Hop ft. STRATMAN
OP:
looking for a terrible, discordant, thrash lead guitar for the break in this song:
Sanctified Fonk
http://www.box.com/s/901f9bdf1e4e44d8f691
(this is the original non-lead version)
any takers welcome!
everything so far is either me, midi, or programmed.
I wasn't really expecting anything, but Strat stepped in to save the day!
Here's Stratman's additions.
http://www.box.com/s/b990b8e7ef63913d30d7
he sent me two different versions, but i really like them both and couldn't see leaving either out, so i sorta combined them. appreciate you Strat!
now that they're present, i'd like to know how well i mixed the guitars in. do they feel like they "belong" (in the mix), or like someone just threw some guitars over a completely different backing?

Well it's a great song, which I would expect from you.
I think you've made the guitar sit as well as I would have wanted.
Having been involved in creating it, I can't be completely objective about whether it benefits from a discordant guitar break (or my take on discordant guitar break). It was certainly fun doing it. I tried to make it get increasingly intense, including 'intentionally' starting to play ahead of the beat towards the end to increase the tension. It's almost a relief when it stops . Maybe I went a bit OTT.
It would be good to get some views on it. I was going for a sort of Adrian Belew meets Vernon Reid approach. This was a bit of an experiment for me. Be as critical of the guitar as you like.
Pete

that's precisely the effect i wanted. you delivered perfectly. that's why i couldn't see throwing either part out completely.

Pro stuff as usual, Sam. That ghostly almost out of key synth thing caught my attention. Gives a certain spice to the song.
I'm an old fan of Belew, back from his work with Talking Heads. Stratman, you have great chops, and the solo fitted perfectly, imo.
Maybe the drums could step up a bit more during the solo. Bang about a little, along with the guitar.

Sammy, you already know how much I dig this track, but I want to chime in to say Pete, you completely nailed this and brought such a cool contrasting vibe to the song. It looks like it was just what Sammy was hoping for, and I gotta tell you that you executed it perfectly.
Very, very cool, all around.

Sorry, I'm very late to this
Wow! Love it. Fantastic mix. Guitar is demented and wonderful.
I love with your chord structures, Sammy, how you set up an expectation of a particular chord progression and then subtly undermine that by doing something different. It's brilliant because it's both hooky but at the same time really original.
And the guitar just explodes! I am such a fan of Pete's playing.
Great work both.

Pete just opened the song up completely.
Strat, if you're reading this, i've now had a taste and i'm hooked. you guitar dealers are really sly with your drugs.

Fuck. You guys are awesome!
Great song, great sound. Congrats on the lead.
And there's something about that cracking snare. I'm sure it's easy but buggered if I can do it.

hey man. it's Addictive Drums with a little inboard effects tuning on the snare. didn't have to do much of anything in Reaper except to fit it into the mix as a whole.
