Default Real time recording of midi instrument changes w/ rewire?

I would like to like to be able to fiddle with different midi instruments in Ableton and have Reaper record the output as I hear it. That is, I don't need the midi data, but just the audio output. I have rewire working fine, but Reaper records the midi stuff and uses whatever instrument was selected last. Have tried different Reaper record output options but to no avail.

How can I best accomplish this?

Tanks!

Insert patch change commands in the relevant MIDI track at the point on the time line where you need the change to occur.

If you need help learning how to do this, two sources of good information.
The Roland Book on MIDI and of course the Reaper user guide. General principles as per Reaper from the user guide, Nut and bolts of why and how from the Roland booklet.
Oh and you will of course need the MIDI implementation chart for the VSTi you are using to know what code to send.

Have fun!

Thanks. I know how to do instrument changes in the midi after the fact, but in this case I'm not interested in having Reaper record to a new midi track. The goal is to be able to play Ableton, change the instrument on a track in real time, and have Reaper record the track as I am hearing it (analogous to using a mic to record the speaker output.) Maybe the Ableton rewire thing is a red herring and this is just a generic "record output from another program" question?
