VST sounds disappearing
Fairly often, maybe every 30 minutes or so, the Reaper screen stops responding. It comes back after a while but all the midi tracks are silent, and to hear them I have to go through each track FX and add the VSTs again, even though the correct VSTs are still listed and selected in the track FX. Any ideas about this?
Separate question: Is there a drag/select mouse option? So when, for example, I want to select several notes in the piano roll and delete/move them I don't have to go through each individually. Using shift click is not always suitable.

Which VST plugins are you using exactly in this project?
And are you using any demo versions of plugins (where the demo time might be running out and hence the plugin stops working)?
Otherwise can you attach a screenshot of this problem?

Hold the Right-Mouse Button while dragging and spanning a selection rectangle over all the notes you want to select.
It's called Marquee Select and is by default assigned to the Mouse Modifiers for [MIDI Editor] [right drag].

I am using a variety of the DSK ones, eg piano, drums, Rhodes. Also MaxSynths Bass Module. They aren't demo versions. Tbh I doubt it is the VST themselves that are the problem. When one goes, they all go. I can get them back, but it's tedious having to add them all again and redo the settings for each.
Ah, marquee select - very useful!

sounds like your interface or midi driver is losing it's connection to reaper...
what are you using for both those?

Don't know about those. What are they? I'm just using it on my laptop without anything else.

So you are just using the internal soundcard of your laptop (with headphones or speakers), correct?
Which laptop model is this exactly? And which operating system?

...and what are you using to input midi notes? the virtual keyboard? or just drawing them in? or a real midi keyboard?

The laptop:
Samsung New Series 9
i-5 - 2537m 1.40 GHz
4gb RAM
Windows 8 x64
Doesn't seem to have a sound card - just says Intel Display Audion and Realtek High Definition Audio.
I'm listening through speakers plugged into the laptop. I'm just inputting midi notes with the mouse.

The Realtek HD Audio is the internal soundcard chip in your laptop.
The Intel Display Audio Driver gets installed with your Intel Graphics Card Driver and is in general for transmitting audio to external displays connected through a HDMI or DisplayPort port (since they are capable of transmitting video and audio over the same cable) ...
Since it's difficult to guess what might be the issue here (without knowing more details or seeing screenshots of the problem, etc.), I'd recommend to go through some audio tuning tips in general first:
