Default Question about Reaper program updates

I'm currently using an evaluation version of Reaper v3.4, and I think it's an excellent program, so I'm planning on buying the $40 licence (I won't be making any money from what I produce anytime soon). The thing is, my PC is quite old (see below), and I know there are program updates quite often.

So my question is, does the program get more resource-heavy with new updates? Should I be sticking with v3.4 seeing as I know it works?

My other question regarding updates is that I could be in the middle of a project, and then I update the program and it might not work anymore. If that was the case, then could I go back to the previous version which was working?

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
OS Service Pack Service Pack 3
Intel Pentium 4 516, 2933 MHz (22 x 133)
1511 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)

Intel GMA 900
Acer AL1714 [17" LCD]
IC Ensemble M Audio Audiophile
ST380011AS (80 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA)
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-116D
C: (NTFS) 73359 MB (18819 MB free)
D: (FAT32) 2951 MB (1852 MB free)
K: (NTFS) 305242 MB (47642 MB free)
Total Size 372.6 GB (66.7 GB free)

if an update causes problems its very easy to go back...

regarding growing cpu-usage in newer versions ints not significant in a way that i have noticed.

Good to know, thanks! I've tried Cubase SX in the past, and my PC cooling fan, processor and RAM were constantly struggling. So I tried Reaper, and I can do exactly the same thing without my PC going crazy. Great program, and at a great price too.

Usually, it gets even more optimized (probably one of
the few programs that adds features and at the same time
gets more stable and faster .. 90% of the time)

Never happens, or at least not in a way it would totally
screw up something. It might get different, or there might
be some unforseen buggy behavior (which usually gets fixed
asap), so nothing to worry about. There are some minor things
which get reset with a new installation, which may or may
not be important to you, but hopefully that will be rectified.

All previous versions are always available on this site, so
you can get back to any version you wish:

Great! I've bought myself a licence and updated to the latest version, quick and painless!

Ridiculous we ask these questions of software... Everything should work like Reaper.
