ReaGate and ReaComp presets
Heres an initial offering, I'll get more done when I can. These are just starting points. You will need to adjust threshold, and in many cases the frequencies in the detector
FOr the instrument specific ones, look at your instrument in reafir and try and find its peaks and set accordingly. These should get you in the ballpark however.
For the mix presets, note I have high passed a bit so yuo wont lose your bottom. For me, I let the mastering engineer chose the size of door the mix will ultimately fit thru so I leave it a bit open.

Just to clarify, to use these:
1) download to your disk
2) go to an instances of reagate or reacomp, click the ... button right next to the preset list.
3) select "import preset library", then navigate to the .RPL file you downloaded.

Nice! Thanks pipeline for the presets and Justin for enabling it.
Great addition. I've learned to trust my ears but a good pre-set save time getting there.

Sure would like to see presets for all JS fx included in Reaper. Maybe if we organize these offerings & verify them (use the wiki?), Justin would include them.

hey pipeline,
thanks a lot for the rib drums.RTrackTemplate - call me ignorant but it was not until I tried your template that I understood the greatness of majortom. that's one good sounding compressor! (thanks SStillwell too, of course!)
one question: would you consider sharing the impulses used in the template as well?
I had a lookaround over at noisevault and I think I found the right "9 big UK"-impulse over there (did you use two variations on that impulse?). however, the "TC M5k\REVCORE 2\InstRoom.wav" I could not find.
(I did not understand if there was a way to search impules by uploader...)
and (I know I'm asking a lot but...) if possible also share an example of the kind of snare sample you use in Drumagog. (I cannot afford Drumagog at the moment but I'm guessing something similar could be acheived using a bunch of free tools (?).) or just a description of what kind of sample you'd use if the ones you do use are not legal to share.
what the heck, since I'm already on the asking-to-much-trail I might as well ask if you'd consider sharing the eq-settings in the sony eq (for us who don't have it, that is). if you could just float all the sony eq windows and make a screen dump that would be great.
regardless if you can find the time to do this or not: thanks again for the template - a totally different approach to drum mixing than the one I use, which means there are lots o' things to learn from it!
regards,
- Jonas Eriksson

For the dumagog stuff, the samples would likely have been my older "AES" drum samples you can find floating around on the net...
Here's a host
http://www.lightningmp3.com/giraffe/Pipelineaudio's%20AES_24_drums/
Using reagate's midi send and reasamplomatic, plus some utility scott stillwell made you can get it going pretty well

thanks a LOT, pipeline. really appreciate it!
instead of drumagog I used this fxchain for drum replacement:
* ReaGate to isolate the hits I wanted to substitute (guess I could've used ReaFir but ReaGate did the trick so...)
* SStillwell/drumtrigger to translate the hits to midi (with pretty accurate velocities as well - very impressive plug-in!)
* and ReaSamplOmatic5000 to playback the sample I wanted
...works like a charm!
isn't it nice when you want to do something you never done before and you already have all the tools you need! in a 2 mb package...

- Jonas Eriksson

Does Reasamplomatic support multi velocity samples? that woul dbe the bee's knees. So far as I can tell it is only one sample at a time for all velocities.

I'm not sure, but I do not think ReaSamplOmatic supports multi velocity samples (could and would be happy to be wrong, though )
what I did was adding a sample of a snare miced from below (near the snare wire) to a snare track that was miced from above. and even though it's the same sample played back every time (only at different velocities) in blends in quite nicely with the original snare track and overheads.
(the sample I used was recorded using the same snare as the original snare track, which probably helps.)
adds some nice "hair" to the snare. my god, was that a rhyme?

- Jonas Eriksson

Just tried it...man, I'm giving Drumagog the flick...this works wicked!
The beauty of this is you can set up several receive tracks loaded with different samples, and solo each one to compare, and even blend together with the original. Way easier to blend then on Drumagog, you've got nice long throw faders here.
Just set up a few tracks, load your samples up perhaps with eq, and save as a track template...call it BFO Drumreplacer
Fwiw, Reagate is the bees knees of gates, it hasn't got a graphical gui but who cares when you have pre-open and other goodies...awesome! Although throw one on like ReaEQ and ReaFir has, and you have one sick plugin.

while you guys are at it, be sure to send the midi from each to another track and hit record output on it...that way your triggers will become midi notes you can throw in the quantizer

Oooh, nice! Thanks!
Hey Pipe, you work with Drumagog, can you see any downside to my method vs using Drumagog? Anything I've missed? I plan to just do the ol' render and mute trick when I'm happy with the sound.

That ReaGate looks pretty sexy for that drum replacement stuff. Certainly better than paying alot of money for a commercial solution.
I don't think I've ever needed a drum replacement technique - it must be one of those things that really comes in handy when you're recording drums (which I've never done).
Regardless - it still sounds great.

Caleb

Drumagog is the dealcincher that made me go PC really. My life is triggering drums
Drumagog had a solution which killed the machinegun and typewriter effects of the other triggers
I am thinking someone will make a JS plug that will take say the input from sstillwell's drums trig or reagate and then say send midi note a, next time send midi note B next time send midi note C, etc...
then different drum samples from the same drum can be put into a sample app that has cells (maybe a newer reasamplomatic). You could then send each track's midi to this thing, record its midi out and edit away...then when you were done, duplicate the track and "apply fx to selected takes" on its items and have a nice audio track without any edits

Ahh yes, forgot about the cells. That is the difference, the humanisation of it on fast kicks.
Maybe ReaMultisampler, Justin?

duuuuude,
I already DID that, man. It's a JS plug called randomizer. Use it. Enjoy.

actually, you can use Scott's randomizer in combination with several instances of ReaSamplOmatic to avoid the "machine gun effect".
it's kind of hard to explain, but take a look at the attached fx chain. (you will of course have to load samples into the ReaSamplOmatics and add a drum track if you want to *hear* it in action.)
first in the fx chain: ReaGate to choose which hits to replace. second: Scott's drumtrigger to convert theses hits to midi, I choose to let it ouput on note 69.
then: the randomizer. I set it to listen to note 69 and output notes between 69 and 70.
next in the fx chain: two ReaSamplOmatics. the first I set to listen only to note 69 and the second to listen only to note 70. (make sure you set the pitch@start and pitch@end to zero.)
voila! no machine gun!
(or, to be honest, more like two guns fired in turns as I only used two different samples. if you want to use this for real you'd probably like to use more samples by increasing the note range in the randomizer and adding more ReaSamplOmatics.)
now all we need is ReaSamplOmatic to support multi velocity samples
I still cannot believe how extremely powerful the ReaFX in combination with Scott's are!
regards,
- Jonas Eriksson

Very cool Jonas. It makes me wonder what else is hidden in Scott's bag of tricks
I think I'm gonna have to start going through them one by one to see what's up.
