Need a robust delay plugin
I feel like I go between delay plugins too much and neither of the one's I use are great.
KJAERHUS Classic Delay - I use this for ping pong delays. I absolutely love using the ping pong effect. Problem is this plugin is finicky with the FX level and feedback. The first tap is too loud. Can't get it to decay naturally. I like it but it's not good enough.
Karma FX Deelay - My main reason for using this is it has a filter for the delay (LP and HP) and you can dial in a bpm to sync. It doesn't do ping pong well at all.
My main desires in a delay plugin are: - Ping Pong
- Filter for the delay
- Sync to project bpm
Any suggestions? I'd love to find a free solution but I'm willing to pay if the plugin is good enough. I appreciate the input!

Valhalla has a nice delay. The usual price - $50.

LOL, four replies, four different plugins...did we expect this? I use ReaDelay, but I'm not trying to pull off any amazing delay tricks.

I'm going to add another BIG +1 for VoS Nasty DLA MkII. It is by far my favourite and most used delay plugin.

As a delay addict i bit the bullet and got the fabfilter timeless. It´s the only one you can drop on a track and only send certain parts to the delay via the input volume knob (i don´t understand why a delay would need a input gain for the dry signal). Ducking the delay to the dry signal is easily done inside the plug too. And then there´s the rest of the modulation.

If you have Reaktor, here are some other options that I like (and I think meet your criteria):
Boscomac
- Bouncing Ball
- Delight Delay
- Echophonic
Dub Delay Core
Wonder Echo
I'm kind of a delay whore...
Other non-Reaktor delays that didn't see above:
Bionic Supa Delay
Tal Dub Delay
Have fun

This is my favorite one (together with ReaDelay), and I also still use the good old VoxengoTempoDelay sometimes.
Cheers,
Alex

The Waves H-Delay is a really useful delay unit. I use it for live sound as well as studio. You can grab the delay time control and 'work' it like a tape delay (the continuous ramping up/down thing the kids call 'dub' now) or tap in a tempo and go back and forth between those two methods at will. Dub out tape delay style one moment and tap in a tempo the next to immediately place that critical echo perfectly. Very quick for live work! It has filters and modulation as well.

Readelay doesnt do ping pong. Its the only freebie that does multitap delays though so it is useful.
The 2 best freebies I've found are
Twin Delay (simple but effective)
http://www.rhythm-lab.com/plugins/twin_delay
Nasty DLA (more complex: chorus, saturation, multiple modes.)
They both do ping pong too. I recently bought Waves H-delay on sale for $29.
So bewteen H-delay and those 3 freebies I get every delay type I need:
Digital
Tape
Analog
ping pong
stereo
dual mono
Multitap
Tap tempo
Bitcrushed/distorted
modulated
endless feedback
pitch modulation/ufo sounds/general weirdness

Plenty of good suggestions already, I'll just add one more, Tritik tkDelay.
http://www.tritik.com/products/tkdelay/
Not free, but as it is still in beta, you can get it for a whopping 9€ (~ $12). It has ping pong, one filter type so far, project sync, tap, reverse, frequency shift, overdrive etc.
I love delay fx but until very recently have used pretty much just what the DAWs had (ReaDelay and JS Delay_Pong here). I was testing several options but happened to miss the Waves H-Delay sale. I didn't let that mistake happen with Boz Imperial Delay. Other two under the consideration were FabFilter Timeless 2 and Valhalla ÜberMod.
edit: Oh yea, Cerendir, TAL DUB-II in my fx folder for a long time. Seen some use, but for some reason I never got the DUB-III.

I had NastyDLA as my preferred delay as well (together with OhmBoyz), but I discovered an issue with it, which hasn't yet been fixed.
ReaDave seemed to have a similar issue but solved it with "normalizing" plugins:
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=124159
In my case, for my particular problem, that doesn't seem to help though:
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewto...p?f=6&t=419417
So, for me it's all about Ubermod, Ohmboyz and Classic Delay now...
EDIT: tried again, reproduced again fairly easily the problem (10% CPU on a quad core machine, back to 1.1% turning input saturator off) and placed the normalizer effect.
And....It works as long as the floor level of the normalizer plugin is put around -300dB (GVST GNormal didn't work because by default it sends -350DB signal level)

My goto for pingpongs
On the commercial side, besides Ohmboyz take a look at PSP42 (a Lexicon emulation & PSP84 (basically two Lexicon 42 with cross modulation).

MkII is out for a while, and it doesn't seem to have any denormal issues.

ReaDelay is very versatile,
but don't deal well with tempo-changes

Make sure you record that and put a delay on it. Might come in useful on a future song.

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned AcmeBarGig's AfterShock - quite tasty, but not so easy to find these days....

ABG stuff used to be one of this forum's darlings, but they've moved and who knows what's happened to development and etc. etc. It's impossible to keep fans that way, and it's sad to see that it happened. I ponied up before the release of Headcase too.

For ping-pong delay, try my chain using ReaDelays.
https://stash.reaper.fm/v/21890/MonoK...hain#file_info
The note that goes with it:
"This is a nice pingpong delay. Bouncing the delay between the left and right speakers. To adjust make sure the left and right are set to the same time and the predelay to half that.
Of course you can set them less accurately for some more disconcerting ping pongs! Also mess with the left and right's feedback and highpass filter at about 300-500Hz for dubby goodness."
And no one seems to have mentioned the FREE offering from Valhalla - FreqEcho.
I use that all the time.

That chain is pretty complicated and not something I'd want to futz with when mixing.
I just figured out how to make a Left->Right->Center echo with GmemSend/Receive and ReaDelay.
Would be great to not have to "hack" and trick ReaDelay into doing what we need.

At this price you are very close to a used tc electronic d2, which is real, hardware.
Btw too bad that the kjaerhus Classic xxx are not 64 bit.

TC D Two is a great unit. I have one in my FX rack (and a Lexicon PCM 41) and I use them mainly for live improvisation but for final mixes, I nearly always use Nasty DLA MkII and ReaDelay.
I'm looking at expanding the inputs on my Fireface UFX soon though so I might go back to the hardware delays for some mixes.
