alas, found collaboration mecca
check this out , have not actually tried it yet but seems very promising and right down my alley of wanting some mechanics to collaborate with others musicians and engineers on my projects. It involves a VST so that should mean that we can hook all of this up to Reaper.
Anybody play with it yet ? for some reason their demo avi though is not working for me.
Anyhow, this is interesting. What do you all think ?

I think it could be worth to give it a try. Really!
(But before that: what about a link or at least a hint what you mean?
)

Not a big fan myself. A good thing too, my doctor told me I should lay off that stuff.

Wait, wait... this is a riddle! Charles wants to play Google scavenger hunt with us!
I'll bite. Depending on the information given in the OP, I think the solution is... THIS!
Now where can I get my prize?!

If it more incredible than nothing you are in with half a chance - is it the sound of one hand clapping?

ok ladies I deserve the razzing for being sloppy.
So without further adieu , ta ta:
http://www.digitalmusician.net/index.php?id=325
They also have a vid here:
http://www.digitalmusician.net/filea...r/dml_demo.avi
but it seems broken. I can't open it in Windows Media Player , got it to play in Quicktime but it shows up incomplete.
the catch is that to use the VST you have to register with then but they have a free membership.

No. It sure looks interesting, but internet connection at my studio is far beyond capable (because not existing) at the moment.
Now stop drawing off my attention from the subject and tell me WHERE MY DAMN PRIZE IS!!

Woo-hoo! Free alcohol! You made my day!
On a side note: AVI video is definitively broken. But there are plenty of (working) video tutorials here that should give an impression.

this is not about jamming with people, but about the support for a remote session, it seems it may effectively support collaborative mix i.e. at least I think the other party can listen to the other party's change in the mix and use chat to discuss it. It also should be possible to have a Skype session on at the same time and discuss this.
I plan to check it out with a colleague this weekend

requirements for DML
the requirements:
* DMN Standard-, Pro- or Studio-Account
* Fast Internet connection (broadband) with at least 128 kBit/s upload and 768 kBit/s download.
* Audio sequencer with VST (min. 2.0) or RTAS interface
* a simple microphone (for the talkback connection)
* A webcam if you want to have visible contact with your recording partner.
Audio and MIDI recording is currently only supported by Nuendo/Cubase (Version 2.xx or later), Ableton Live 5 and Pro Tools. Please check our compatibility list to see which sequencers support what functions.
----
So I guess there's a chance that Reaper can't record. Don't understand why , I would have thought that if it supports the VST api that would be all it needs.

Hey Charles. Are you happy with it after some time using it?
I liked the look and concept of Digital Musician but after a short while it became really frustrating, sorry to say. Yet I too had initially thought it to be the ideal collab tool.
Maybe things have changed since I tried, but I remember having to give it a number of shots to connect with my collaborator at the start of any session - and we definitely had correct ports open & local routing all set since it worked some times, but it was just hit & miss for others.
You couldn't opt to not send webcam feed without unplugging/disabling any connected camera. My laptop has one built in and my DAW machine TV to firewire interface was detected as being a webcam too and so wasted bandwidth sending color bars unless I disconnected each time.
The "community" aspect - which is something I love in ninjam - was very intrusive with DMM/DML since I never wanted a "let's all play together" tool - can't beat ninjam for that in my opinion.
Not only did I get a lot of emails offering services and from people wanting to collab, but when I was in sessions with my partner I would get chat requests to work on projects while I was actually connected & doing stuff. This felt a bit like people knocking on a studio door when you're busy.
But.. I'm curious to know if you or others have had better experiences and maybe some of this stuff has already been ironed out. Being a VST certainly seems like the ideal place for it.
It's a shame ninjam doesn't have that "add multiple instances for your ins & outs" architecture. Rather than one single instance and internal routing it would be great to add one to "take over" any send or receive track (or the master) as required. Digital Musician had that part nicely sorted.

was scheduled to try it tonite but got tied up. I did note a preference setting that should prevent messages sent to you while being connected , also you can limit so that messages only come from partners.
I learned about DML from bumping into these guys :
http://www.sessionplayers.com/how_we_work.html
figured that if they were making it happen that it should be viable.
I'll definitely report back when I give it a solid try.
BTW, did you have any issues using DML with Reaper and recording? apparently some hosts do according to dm.
later
