toolbar text icons --- dbl wide not enough
Hey Dev's ... just a thought about the text icons for toolbars...
given the rapid growth of lua scripts, and the expectation of many more, along with their various names, I find the dbl wide text icons no longer sufficient to clearly label many actions...
I wonder if it would be possible for you to have triple and quadruple wide text icons... ? Sure, I can make my own png files for these but that often is not the ideal way to go.
thanks listening

ah Ok so a mod moved this to here... but I really do think it wanted to be in the pre release topic since it is so related to work currently being done on 5.xxx versions. Just my humble opinion.

I agree with this FR, particularly because with higher resolution displays, one wants to use larger fonts for legibility, which exacerbates the shortage of space on double width buttons.

well I wish more people would take a look here and comment about it... no point in making an official FR is no one else wants it.

I am all for more customization of toolbar buttons.
Since the issue track is toast, here's my request for toolbar customization : - Finer grid of toolbar button sizes
Use a WALTER image that is stretchable for the toolbar buttons if you don't already.
Triple-wide buttons, 2x2-sized buttons, 1/2 by 2-sized buttons and so on.
- Colour-Tintable standard buttons
My request is due to the experience I've had with OSC and other touch-screen applications that let you customize the colour of the fields you touch, like the apps Actions, the EuCon app by Avid, Lemur, the touch screen soft keys of the control surface Artist Control, the Euphonix S6 and probably any and all midi/osc trigger apps out there.
It's quicker and easier to see by colour and location than by text or icon. So let's try that. You can colour TCPs and MCPs, so it's just a matter of priorities is my guess.
- Drag'n'droppable images for use as toolbar buttons.
Toolbar editor, drag an image, Reaper scales it down, maybe let's you crop stuff. Saves it to a toolbar custom image folder.
Reaper then handles the three states itself in some standard way. Normal for unpressed, 1 by 1 pixel right/down movement and bevel for pressed and some way to highlight for mouse-over or right-click activation.
How's that Hopi ?

a very good start Airon and thanks...
one niggle... triple wide is not enough... you might think I'm nuts but consider a clear text icon for many of the newest scripts...
Copy Items of Selected Tracks... etc, etc.
sure, we can use abbreviations, but why not just be able to spell it out so that years later we don't have think, "now wtf does that mean?"
I know someone will say, "hopi, there is no end to the width wars"... and, OK... I agree, but 4 times wide would be a good beginning.

I vote too for the ability to have triple and quadruple width toolbar buttons. A small mockup:

I'd prefer the width to be defined by the content of the button, so it is always large enough.

Nah. every button could be a different width. And I would want some buttons to have two lines of text, without me inserting "line-break" characters into the text..

Would this be fairly easy to implement in a coming version? Seems like a necessity considering how Reaper is growing with so much power!!!

I would also have liked this. Maybe having three sizes; 1x, 2x and 4x?

Why not also for height?
I would prefer taking any .svg and defining inside some variables like: name, actionid
Then Reaper should show this .svg instead. Would open lots of design options. Much more unique daw presentations would be possible. Metallica fans could click on faces of their idols, adding a bass instrument click on the face of the bassist of that band. Why not? But ok, on the web interface we can have this already. Not a bad alternative actually.

No, they wouldn't - you would end up with buttons with all sorts of different widths or heights or both.

Hmm, I don't see that as a problem, really. Maybe only flexible widths, then. If you look at S1, it doesn't look messy at all.

Why not have the button defined by the graphic size? For me I need larger buttons on both dimensions.
Why not have 60px (high) by 60px (wide) or any other multiple of the height for the width?
Cheers

Large Icons are OK
So I tried making a 48px by 144px icon and Reaper displayed it as a 48px square icon as it should.
I'll try to see if it can go double width (ie: 48px by 288px).
Cheers

Hi DarkStar, can you elaborate more about inserting "line-break" characters, please?
Or did you mean just any normal visible character to manualy force text after them to skip on new line? :-D
Thanks

Fergler was talking of the width of the button being determined by the content of the button, so the longer the label the wider the button.
And I was saying that I would want some buttons with 2 lines of text - that would not be possible with the above approach unless the devs added a mechanism for force a line-break.
At the moment you can insert spaces into the middle of the text to force a wrap around.

+1 for the 1x 2x 3x 4x options.
Also, is there a way to select double width as one's default size?
