Default red middle-line in items in every theme ? (solved)

I have this red line in every theme I use.
First pic is default 4.0, second is default 3.0.

(The second item is a empty recorded Audio item. But it's also there in MIDI items).
It's no envelope.
In screenshots from other users I don't see this line.
Where does it come from and how can I get rid of it ?

It's normal.

In your audio items, it acts as a volume handle and as a velocity handle for MIDI items, to raise/lower the volume/velocity.

Personally, I think they are pretty handy for bigger volume adjustments on items, but find myself using envelopes more and more these days. If you don't want to see them, go to Options/Preferences/Media and under "Media Item Editing/Media Item Adjustment Range" and change the option to -inf..+0db. This will move the adjustment handle to the top of your media item (hover over the top and you will see your cursor change to a double head), and you will no longer have the line in the middle. The dis-advantage is now you can still lower the volume of an item, but you can't increase above 0db.

Thanks.
But no, this is no volume handle as far as I can tell. I can't do anything with it. It's just there.

edit:
Ah, testing further, it's a combination of what bigwoody said above and having the item volume adjustment set as knob in preferences.
Then the redline is there but doesn't do anything (it's a small bug I'd say).
Setting Media item volume range to -inf to 0 as said above makes it indeed go away and I still have the volume knob available for adjusting.
So all good now.
Thanks again.

I forgot about being able to put the volume knob on items, it does seem strange that you can't use either the line or the knob to adjust when the preference is set to +6db. Anyway, glad you got it cleaned up.

Sorry, I was the one that wasn't clear. What I meant to say is i agree it seems like a bug that you can't use the line as well as the knob in this situation.

Just to clarify:

I CAN use the the knob when it's set to +6db (that's what my screencap is showing), the thing that got me confused is that the red line still sits there in the middle and is actually of no use.

Thanks for this. Setting the range to -inf to 0 fixed it for me too. But it is a bummer that I can't gain over 0 now.

You can still increase the volume using the handle if you hold down the shift button and drag up. Just sayin'........
