Default Windows 64 vs 32?

I love my Reaper. And let's say that I have access to multiple versions of Windows (7, XP, both 32 and 64 bit for both). I also have a 64 bit ready computer running XP Pro 32 bit presently. Does anyone on this most amazing forum from the even more amazing Reaper community have any input/advice about what would be the ideal operating system for me to run Reaper on? Driver issues? Software issues? The computer I am referring to is a HP Pavillion that can take up to 8G's of ram. It's about three years old. And as far as compatibility issues, this computer handles my mixing, processing, and editing with Reaper. I have a family and for now must do the actual tracking in my basement on a minimal single processor computer and do the processor/memory intensive duties on the "good" computer. So any change of operating system won't affect my interface and ability to track. Thanks in advance for any thoughts you all may have. Music time!

If your computer can take it, Windows 7 64 bits hands down. 64 bits because you don't have the 4 gigs of RAM limit. Memory management in Win7 is light years ahead of anything MS made in the past.

The only show stopper you may have is drivers for older gear which may not be available. Vista driver usually don't work in Windows 7 for audio gear because of how Windows 7 managers low level access to the OS, which very different than Vista.

You think Windows XP is good, compared to Win7 it is crap, I have yet to see an OS crash after 8 months of use and somewhere around 4 or 6 reboots not counting those required by critical updates....my computer is never shut down or almost.

I´m under windows 7 x64, and running reaper x32 and x64...

Certainly than I prefer w7 x64 than x32.

w7 x64 + reaper x32 runs so well...

but reaper x64 still needs some development...still there are some isues with ram and the x86 bridge and other minor and mayor issues...more development needed...

Install win 64 and use the 32 bit version of reaper till the x64 one catches up.

What do you mean until x64 catches up? Is there something wrong with REAPER 64-bit? I have 12GB of RAM, is it really worth it for me to run REAPER 32-bit?

imo go 64 bit as soon as you have more than 3 gigs of ram. windows 7 is the best operating system for multi core computers.

other than that if you have xp and it's working for you, keep using that, if you have a powerful computer and windows 7 x64 on hand, plus more than 3 gigs of ram, then i'd switch to windows 7 64 for sure. bridged plugins are slightly annoying, and also the fact that you will have 2 program files folders, one for 64 bit stuff and one for 32 bit stuff is slightly annoying but you get more ram better multi-core use, and a nicer OS so it's worth it.

Great info. Since I started this thread, I indeed installed W7 64bit, and as others have said, it is far better at memory management than any other MS OS. I am getting the idea that Reaper 64bit is not quite ready...? Anyone out there having luck with it? What are the advantages to using Reaper 64 over the 32bit Reaper (which seems to work well with W7 64)?

As far as I know, the issues with Reaper x64 are entirely about compatibility with 32-bit plugins (that is, bridging).

So again, what are any advantages to using Reaper 64 on W7 64 instead of Reaper 32?

That's pretty much my experience. REAPER 64 on Win7 64 is my production DAW now. The more I explore the REAPER plugins, the less I find I need many of the well known ones I used to use. In fact, for the most part, all my bases are covered with REAPER plugs, a few Stillwell plugs, Ozone 4 (32 bit bridged), Superior Drummer 2 (64 bit), SampleTank (32 bit bridged) and a couple of others.
From my experience, all the above-mentioned plugins run flawlessly in REAPER 64.

Memory management primarily. I've actually found REAPER 64 to be MORE stable on my system with the plugins I mentioned than REAPER 32 (both on Win7 64).
YMMV depending on the plugins you use though.

Huh? Did I miss something? Until the recent RC1 Reascript wasn't working in X64, nor is Rewire. I haven't yet had problems with bridging, though...

ReWire should work, assuming everything is installed (you need to install Reaper's bridge for ReWire to work). If you have troubles with it, please start (or bump) a dedicated thread to discuss it.

You're of course correct that ReaScript/Python was not supported on x64 until the latest prerelease (and ReaScript/Perl is still not supported on x64).

and (correct me if i'm wrong, schwa?) the other one that's come up a few times is that if there's a crash in the x64 version, the crash offset information isn't as useful to the devs as if the same crash occurred in the x32 version. but this has happened to me maybe twice in the last 12 months, so it's not a huge deal.

Is this bridge part of a full install or something else?

Might this be coming soon? 64 is a no-go for me unless Perl Reascripts work.
