V4 Theme: Rock Solid - Updated 24th Nov 2011
I have just finished my first theme. I did it as a bit of fun, and to see how close I could get it to look like a hardware mixer. I had to span the rar as it was too big for one file in stash - you can download it here: Part 1 and here: Part 2
INSTALLATION:
You need to download both parts and make sure they are downloaded to the same location. Then, extract part 1. You only need to extract part 1 as part 2 is automatically extracted so long as it is stored next to the first part.
You should end up with a folder containing the Rock Solid theme file, and a readme.txt. The theme file is 3.64mb in size.
Once the file is extracted, go into the folder and find the 'Rock Solid.ReaperThemezip' file. If you double click the 't-shirt' icon it should automatically install itself into your themes list.
If not, you will need to manually copy the theme file into the clipboard, then open your themes folder and paste the theme file into it. You can find the themes folder by opening Reaper, and going to 'Options' -> 'Show REAPER resource path in explorer/finder...' From the window which opens, double click the folder called 'Color Themes'. Paste the 'Rock Solid.ReaperThemezip' file in here.
You can then select the theme in the normal way - Go to 'Options -> Themes and look for Rock Solid.
INFO:
If you want to use the MCP MASTER in a separate window or in the docker, you will need to use the "Stretchy" layouts as the others do not work.
There are only input boxes on the MCP on "Wide Record" layout ... but you can access the inputs easily by right clicking on the ARM button.
The Folder 2 Layouts for both TCP and MCP automatically darken folder tracks.
There are quite a few layouts in this one - If you want to edit the list/delete some, unzip the ReaperThemezip file and open the 'rtconfig' file in your text editor. You can edit/delete the layouts from there.
The Alt Virtual Armed Layout only looks different to the default layout when armed for recording.
If you have any ideas and you want to change anything - please feel free. Also, please feel free to post up/share any mods!
CREDITS:
I used quite a few elements from RADO by Nick Moritz - Thanks Nick! There are also a few elements from the default theme - Thank you White Tie.
Also thank you to all of the other great themers... There are loads and loads of great REAPER themes which gave me ideas and inspiration.
The star wars icons I used in the test/fun layouts are free icons from http://www.iconfinder.com/ by Everaldo Coelho. If you want to use them for anything, please check the license.
Thank you to everyone on the forum for testing the theme and making suggestions - and thank you for all your kind words!

Very nice! Might ask for a version if this with faders taken off (as have MCU device) and visible inputs and slip you some money if that's possible!
Like it because of big buttons for my touch screens and very visible modes etc.
Can't wait to see it finished!

You are showing us the potential in WALTER. This looks upscale and exciting.
I am extremely impressed and thankful for your devotion to the art of the theme. I want to mix with this.
cheers

Maybe it's just me, but I find the perspective of the knobs off-putting; classic top-view would be better. Pretty cool but too much skeuomorphism for me (i.e. the automation indicators)

Makes me want to mix in Reaper instead of Scope.
I have a Crest X20R I won't sell, and this sure reminds me of it.

I like it but the track names could be easier to read.

Looks like a great touch screen theme! lol
If only you can make the Parameter knobs the same as the pan/width knobs and on the small mixing layout have like a 5 LED style VU meter.. it would be Killer!

I like this very much...it's very promising!
My contras are all related to contrasts:
1.

I agree!
2. Contrast in the track fx parameter controls to low
3. Contrast in the mixer...track/master fx list to low

Great work, but a +1 for scribble strips at the top or bottom of the mixer channels.... either one would do so long as they are easy to read at a glance, which in many of the currently developed themes they are not.
And I have to admit I sort of like the offset view of the knobs.
Now I need to start saving for a touch screen....

I have to agree with Tim's post about the knobs, the perspective is not working. Nothing else in the theme is using the perspective that the knobs have.
Just looks wrong. ymmv
The rest of the theme is very nice.

This theme reminds me a bit of the one unempty did for Samplitude but the Rock Solids graphics look better to me.
Here's his theme (skin as they call it) and a link to more images here http://eintr.org/design/samplitude/vintage/

awesome job NandyC... that's what I miss to massively improve my overall sound.
Even tho I would waste my time to show off with friends forgetting the music, I guess...

i say if most people like the perspective then stick with it but would like to add that the perspective on knobs and fader knobs is different than the rest of the channel strip, therefore it's - frankly - wrong. if you could actually make the accurate perspective of looking onto a real mixer for the whole thing then the knobs would look "right" - i doubt this is possible.
as i said though, keep it the way you like and other than that, great work!

This one makes me consider to ditch the theme I'm using and have for a long time.
Really nice work, NandyC.
Only thing that I don't like that much are the fader knobs, but who cares?

Whoa!
That's some nice work (knob-perspective n' all).
Well, since most of the available superlatives have already been used, my sig'll have to do...

I'm on the side of those who say the knobs weird them out. I'd prefer a straight on view. However, it's your vision for the theme and if I wanted it my way bad enough, I'd start learning that Walter stuff.

This is one of the best themes I've seen! I cut my teeth on an old-school Tascam Porta One, and I love the analogue feel you've got here. Can't wait for you to finish it, 'cause I've got to have this one.
