Default Newbie questions.

When you're recording, can you set a designated stop point?

So it automatically stops when it reaches it.

Oh, and how do you make it play a section before it starts recording?

Well I know you can insert an empty medi event, resize it to your likeing and it will start and stop where you desire.
There is also a cool punch in/out function that will do the trick also.
Search the manual for ethier of these topic's.

Welcome to Reaper by the way.

Yeah, punch-in and punch-out recording sounds like what you want. First, go to Options > Record mode: time selection autopunch. Now, make a time selection in your workflow (drag on the timeline). Then, click on the timeline where you want to begin playback. Then press ctrl + r to record. The song will begin playing but will only record for the time selection you highlighted.

Hope that helps.

Hi Hux,

It isn't a true punch in like on analog tape recorders. A new take will be created and the prior recording won't be deleted.

Here's a rough guide of what to do (recording MIDI in this case):

Big pic:

You can then decide which takes to keep
