New song by Syd and me
Workname: "Sister". Words by Syd. Music, arrangement, performance and production by JS. Todays creative burst. Thank you, Syd - hope you get pleased with the result - throw it in the trash if you hate it.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/togtkkhij7...0321a.mp3?dl=0
I kinda a like it, though... the composition is somewhat poor in harmony/changes, but it was a first run through with no preparation to speak of. I could improve on stuff... as always.
Seriously, we should chip in and hire a REAL guy who sets us straight from time to time... change this - let that be. Cut that out. Trash the song - hard advice like that. Or we could point out a committee, who takes on the job... Not mixing advice this time, but music making advice...
edit: Sister Moon, is called.

A little lugubrious for me, however, IMHO, improvement to arrangement could be made by a. Shortening the "intro" to more like 8 bars and, b. Cutting down the length of the instrumental sections between sets of lyrics and/or inserting some type of recurring melodic theme in these same instrumental sections.
And btw... we could all "improve on stuff... as always"

I wish I could do it like Billy Corgan and Smashing Pumpkins. Or maybe not. Some stoner rock, in every case... goth-folk?

Thanks... yes, it turned out a bit Floydish, for some reason. I left plenty of space for an electric... dotdotdot

NOOoooooooooooo.... No mariachi on this!
Actually I do have a few ideas for this that go nowhere near the Rio Grande. I may be sending a couple 'audition' tracks later, if you'd be open to it.
(After all, I have in the past worked with Bob Ezrin - google him).

The name sure rings a bell... well, I'm moving up in the world... Hehehe, no trumpet it is... feel free to do something else.
I think I'll redo the acoustics - my guitars always sound like that... improvised. Of course they are, but anyway... Just for once, I should discipline myself and do a proper double-tracking, where the guitars are really locked against each other, schoolbook example... I almost never get that far. This one man band has its limits.

I like it Jorgen. It's really a trip because it's so different from what I've done with it and anything else that I've ever done. Don't know if I'd be able to add much to it other than to record and post a bare-bones contrasting version. I'm mainly bass & vox and you seem to have that covered here.

Thanks Syd, glad you like it. I have no idea what your musical preferences are, so I really didn't know what you would make of my take... If you like to do the bass and vox, I simply remove them, make place for you... It was fun, doing it, and I like to listen to it.

pretty cool mood (mood was the very first feeling) to this song. singing could be MUCH improved, but overall pretty damned strong song and melody.

when I was playing more, I had a lot surer sense of key... a key that suited my voice... sometimes it's only a matter of a notch...
it seems now that I have a tendency to start too high... which might pass if you're fired up with the original enthusiasm..
but een then, there's a range where you start sounding not-so-pretty-good

Ahh man.
You know we all here only have the same thing in common.A common goal.
And that is the good of the song.
Please take it on the chin like a big boy...and takes steps to improve it.

Alright, I worked a bit on the vocals, and re-recorded the guitars, changed the key, put in a little surprising/contrasting something... what do you think?

Aaaawwwww SHIT. I'm too late, as usual.
Well I may as well upload it, since I spent a little time w/ it. Here's what I was thinkin' for the "old version", anyway - w/ some "B-3" added.

Tell you the truth, I love keyboards, wish I had a piano, or some midi keys, but no... It's a delicate matter... pads are boring and takes up a lot of space, though I always start out with pads, bass and drums. Somewhere along the line, hopefully some kind of lick or rhythmic figure emerges, so the keys may breath some, leave some holes and contribute to the groove.

Ohh, absolutely. That organ I uploaded is all over the place. I should have chosen my words more carefully. Instead of "Here's what I was thinkin"...", I should have specified that I was referring only to the general tone/sound & bag.
I'm going to pm you.

that's the drawback of working this way on the internet... rough ideas are posted, they're absolutely horrible, and people are turned off... but if you were in the same room with your collaborators, playing live, you'd know more-or-less instantly whether or not the idea worked...
menwhile, 800 people have decided that ReaperMadness is a shit keyboard player

True, the net co-op has its drawbacks... But I've made more and better music through the reaper community, than I've done with folks over here, renting studio and musicians and that whole business... I've tried that a couple of times... and will do it again, money willing. And I want to play live.

first, you've got to have the songs... maybe your songwriting has imporved since you've been using reaper... i'll assume tht's true
but are your songs good enough? ...dood enough for what?
if you want to play live --failing at writing good songs-- you can do covers...
...is your playing and singing good enough by current standards?
and what kind of "live" do you want to do? ..I don't know how many hillbilly bars I've sat in, listening to peole who'd gone as far as they could...

are your songs, singing and playing good enough to attract good players who'd coalesce around you to form a band?

I believe so, yes. Lots of good musicians around, playing covers. I'm not totally without a reputation. I believe many musicians would jump at the opportunity to make original music together, if I only had some kind of deal to offer... I don't know how many songs I've got, but likely around 200, so there's no shortage of material. And I believe there's an audience for it.
But to make all this happen... being my own manager, agent, producer etc etc... I don't know if I can do all those things.
