Er - you are SOL?
Took me a long time to get MY brass requirements sorted out and it wasnt cheap.
I am something of a hammond nerd and the free ones are pretty much all 2 dimensional and naff.
I am still with NIs classic B4 Mk2 and Guidos little gem, both of which cost money.
Stringsd? I generally use sfz freebies because I have string playersd thsat love to scrape away for me for free once I have the parts sorted out/(lucky me!)

I want students to all be able to use the same stuff on projects so that we don;t have to spend crazy amounts of time chasing down matching

I find Dirtbag very well. Especially because it has a nice distortion. And also Organize Trio from GSi is worth while. Also VL122 has a couple of good sounds.

For strings + brass, why not just use one of the good free soundfonts out there like Sonatina?

How are modern soundfont players doing? I like the idea cause then the kids can learn some scripting too. Whats a decent free 64 bit soundfont player?

Not using soundfont, but Sforzando got mentioned quite alot.
And also bigcat instruments made the vst version for the Sonatina library.

if i had students i'd just point everybody to a GM soundfont. that way people could hunt down whatever version they liked the best but still maintain the focus of your course.

Yeah, Sforzando has DFD which sets it apart from other free sample players. I've tested it against Kontakts DFD and it's right in there.
Here is our free drum library that's quite extensive, SMDrums using Sforzando.

Sorry, just saw the comment about problems with bigcat VSTs, ingnore this next part [Bigcat instruments have made several orchestral VSTs from open source samples, including brass - http://bigcatinstruments.blogspot.ca/]
DSK instruments also has free sample based orchestral instruments, including individual brass and ensembles - http://www.dskmusic.com/
I've used both for strings occasionally. They won't fool anyone listening closely, but I've found they sound pretty good in a mix.
