Adjust volume on selected area
Is there a quick and easy way to adjust the volume on a selected area of a take? I'm doing classical music editing and sometimes a single note is too loud and I want to reduce it by 2db. The only way I've figured out on my own how to do this is to put two envelope points at the start of the note( 0, -2) and two envelope points at the end of the note (-2, 0). In other software I've used I could simply select the area, choose normalize, and then adjust by -2db and it would be done. I'm hoping there's an easier way in Reaper too as creating all those envelope points is quite tedious and requires lots of clicking. Thanks for any help.

Hi
You could try spltting the track either side of the area in question (selct the area and SHIFT S). Double click on the area to bring up the Properties Box. At the bottom is an option for Take FX where you can apply any VST to the item.
I am not sure if this is any easier than what you are doing though.

Hi FMNY, and welcome to the forums!
First, split the item either side of the problem area, per martifingers. You can change the volume of individual items.
At the top edge of an unadjusted item, the cursor becomes a double-headed arrow. Click there, and drag down.

Or you do use a take volume envelope. Creating the points is very easy here, not sure whether I had to set it up to do so, I can just do a time selection of the area and then drag the envelope line. Reaper creates the necessary points automatically for me.
(EDIT: Seems with the default settings it's Shift+Ctrl+drag for Windows OS)
The upside is that you don't need to split the item, the downside is that you can't make the take envelope invisible without deactivating it.

Thanks for the answers everyone. I do like gofer's method as I don't want to have splits in my takes if I can avoid that. I will see if I can get things setup like in the video he embedded. That looks a fantastic way to do what I want to do.
EDIT: Yep, ctrl-shift-drag does the trick. Exactly what I need to do and even simpler than the select > normalize way I used to do it with other software.

Once you have done the fix, either heal the splits or glue all items and you are back where you started.
But with your edit in place.
P.S. Dont forget to save the project afterwards!

I like your faux 'area selection" here Gofer, is this with a setting to unlink the cycle selection and how come you are not moving the item when you drag over it?

Hmm gofer, your method looks pretty fast. There must some set-up in there I think.
Trying to follow it but it seems it will work for me by doing this:
Highlight time selection (at a point just below ruler at the top)
add volume envelope on take
add points at beginning and end of selection
Use shift+Ctrl
place curser in middle of timeline bar in selected area and drag down
points should drag down together
which is ok but a good few steps there.
I also dont get the same cursers that you show - the highlight one, the volume env one and the drag down one.
EDIT: Aha, in Options/Envelope Points need to tick 'Envelop points selection follows time selection'
Hmm, what I can't find is how to highlight a time selection with the mouse within the take as you did.
What is that circle/curser when you defined the selection please?

One thought for you:
Long ago I made a floating toolbar dedicated to working with Env. points.
On it I have many actions and custom actions, including all the point shape actions, move up and down or left and right a little, select all, select all in time selection, unselect, etc., etc.
One of those is make four points in time selection. Which then lets you drag the line between the two points up or down...
One note to remember is that if you have Snap turned on, and the time selection is smaller than the grid, the actions for four points will not work since they can't snap to a meaningful grid division... so turn Snap off and then do the env. then turn it back on [if you want it]
The toolbar is good for me since I hate constantly digging around in menus.

I can't replicate what you are doing here. Could you please describe it in more detail?
I select a time interval and a take. Then how do you get the take volume envelope showing? A custom mouse modifier?

I'm quoting this and adding bold font where shown because adding 4 points at time selection is so useful, worth adding to the envelope context menu, yet many people don't know about it. One of the very few menu customizations that i have.
I use it all the time.

Hmmm...
Just tried take automation as described - with a volume envelope - but it didn't work. The item plated back at the same volume.
Tried again with a pan envelope (no vol env) and it worked. Panned left and right.
Then added a volume envelope again and neither worked. No pan. No volume.
This is the first time I've tried take automation, I usually use track automation, so I'm probably missing something. Either that or it's broken.

That's strange. Any chance you can do a licecap to show what your doing / what's happening?

This is what I use too. I used to use take volume but it was kind of unwieldy.

Volume envelope will work but won't affect the visible waveform. Try Pre-FX volume envelope instead.

I've got shift and control for "time selection" too so it's really quick :-)
