Sounds perfect for stable music production, especially if you run a studio.

History... we built a great new computer and were intending to use Thunderbolt on it via the ASUS TB card.

We first intalled win 7 and then learned we had to have 10 to use the TB...
After exhaustive attempts with advice from EVERYONE possible, we found the TB to be not really working for an audio device [foucusrite Scarlett] so we tossed the TB card and the scarlett and went to RME 802 Pro.

We still had win 10 pro 64 as the OS.

Spent a good month installed and setting up all the vaious softs, FX, lib's etc. and it was all working fine.

There was one instance where the OS got hosed because of a M$ auto update that got interrupted because of a power failure that happend while it was going on. That left the system useless but I did have an image back up of a week prior and restored from that.

All seemed OK until... the brand new Dell 43 inch monitor suddently went dead.
OK... deal with Dell and got a replacement delivered a day ago. So now that works.
Expected to just boot up... ahhhh but no.
Instead the nortorius Welcome screen hangs [been there before so we wait it out] ...Eventually that screen puts up an error notice never seen before.

Group Policy Service error... Look it up on the net and find all the solutions [a major registry edit]...which of course you can't do if you can't actully boot up... [M$ ...how can you be sooooo bad]
...and reading the info on it the 'fix' [if you can get to it] merely makes the service run in it's own separate process. WHY THE HELL NOT DO THAT BY DEFAULT M$?

OK... well then let's restore from the latest system image again... that one was made about a month ago when everything was working perfectly.

We do that and still get the Group Policy error during the Welcome screen.
So very clearly whatever it saved and restored was not truly and exactly what was working at that time.

Try the recommened method to boot from the install disk and troubleshoot to 'repair start up'.... hahahaha Can't repair [M$ ...if I ever get my hands around your neck it will be a pleasure to strangle you]

Currently trying the restore from image one more time... but not much hope really...

So what I see now that I did not see until now:

Win 10 may be just lovely, until it eats itself and then you can be really screwed with no way out.

I am about one day away, some more attempts first, to go back to fresh install of Win7 Pro 64. Don't need TB anymore so...

However it will take weeks of time to get everything back in terms of software.

But I have had win7 pro running 24/7 on my other PC for years with barely a hiccup.

At this point I am officially pissed!

End of RANT [for now]
Seems to me all the problems stem from you making serious errors, not Win 10 (which works nicely for an overwhelming majority of users).

Tuff luv ..... but not really unfair IMHO. Seems very tough when perspective from early-on was Win7 is OS nirvana. Personal choices & personal voices, so be it.

Have had fairly smooth ride with early updates since waaaaay back > DOS, 95, 98, 2000, XP, 7, 8, 8.1, 10. Would truly like to see OP find a 'stripped' Win10 version and commit with this new PC.

As you state, quite fairly, ' ... works for an overwhelming majority of users '

All the best @ hopi, no matter your choice!

Thanks, Sostenuto. At least one person realizes I'm not trying to attack the OP.

Unfortunately, these threads quickly degenerate into anti-Microsoft and/or anti-Windows rants that don't help anyone and actually make matters much worse for less experienced users.

In my experience, most problems arise from users trying to prevent problems before they even exist! Registry tweaks because someone on some site recommends it... system processes and preferences changed because of some web page that promises wonderful performance... unnecessary worry about the evils of connecting to the web... , etc.

Fact is a simple default installation is often all a user needs. Windows security is rock-solid these days, so no real need for extra firewalls, anti-virus programs, traffic monitoring software or any other form of 'protection' that often makes performance worse and messes with program installations.

And the biggest culprit: installing all sort of crap, specially cracks, keygens and stuff that modifies the registry. Nobody needs 7,439 plugins (including 85 compressors), seven DAWs or 900 VST Instruments. Use only what you need and your computer will not disappoint!

That said, my own little rant is not directed at the OP. I have no evidence he has done any of what I mention - he just seems to me like he is a victim of all the misinformation and anti-Microsoft bs polluting the web. This thread is a perfect example: very little help or information and lots of anti-Win vitriol.

I am the OP and I don't not agree with you... but just for the record, the install of 10 Pro 64 was new to bare metal, virtually no system tweaks to the registry... the PC it is on is brand new and quite powerful so I have no need to 'optimse' it further...

And I think I have said in previous posts that I surely understand that for many people 10 is just fine. However, I personally resent M$ for taking away some very simple, basic options... example: you want a desktop with a solid background... ANY you want to set the color from 'more colors' options... geeez M$
There is more but I'll leave it there for today

In Creators Update you can choose whatever solid color you want, down to its RGB code.

Hi ED, can I change the color of explorer to another one in Win10? It is always white in Win10, it hurts my eyes.

That I do not know, honestly (but I'm leaning towards "no", unless you change to one of High Contrast themes). I never use Explorer really, I use Total Commander instead.

Yeah I know what you mean, it's either black or white, can't choose the color in my screenshot.

Desktop background can be fully customized though.

Yes, your first serious error was trying to use unsupported hardware (that had been supported in W7). I'm not anti-Microsoft, I'm anti any LIOLI operating system.

The first serious mistake is trying to connect a Scarlett audio interface (USB only) to a Thunderbolt port...lol...see below...

Funny how the "advice from EVERYONE possible" missed that simple detail and had the original poster going crazy trying to solve the problem. Good example of why you can't just go around listening to "EVERYONE". Take your time, do your homework, read the manual, keep it simple and most things will go right.

Ha ha, Hopi old pal ! you chose the wrong example. If you leave w10 stock this IS one of the base options. I switched the usual solid colour custom colour the first day with win10.

yes and no... yes you can use a solid color... no in that you no longer can pick a color other than the swatches they provide... AFAIK anyway

There is a particular color of very dark blue\purple that prefer and it is easy in 7 but don't see it offered in 10

I solved that in the 10 I had by making an image file the size of the screen, set to that color and using that as the 'picture' background...

If OP (@ hopi _ great guy !) had not gone SO FAR down the Win10 Pro path ... but such a shame as he has learned so much now and only a matter of slowly tweaking things to meet his (and son's) needs/preferences. Oh well .....

I feel the same and it's OK... no offense taken

well I did not ever find that color picker... nor the 'more colors'... maybe it's in ED's creative version but not the stock pro 10?

all in all, I'm still way happier with 7 back on the new machine... and got AOMEI back up software on there now... and will use that instead of the win bakup cuz it will do a real bare metal image... nice software btw

Curious how long this thread has become... %^)

There are some issues very recently involving nVIDIA drivers and GeForce Experience.
Running older GTX760 on i7 PC and GTX560Ti on i5 PC. i5 is fine, i7 takes 5 min to load new instances of Kontakt5. Once loaded each instance works fine. Instant load on i5,

NI_USA Support says they are aware and seems to relate to GPU issue since Creators Update(s).

Hi Sostenuto,
I have the Creators update.
I don't have these issues with GTX 760 at all. I just install the main drivers, but not the 3d vision one or experience package.

I recently put a GTX760 back in my PC (after creators update, as it happens - I was running PC sans graphics card for months quite happily). I used i5 and i7 onboard graphics, both were fine for DAW work. I put the 760 back in because I changed monitor and needed higher res than the onboard GPU would allow.

The only issue I have had so far is random blank screen events viewing Youtube fullscreen (FWIW onboards GPUs never did this). This could be down to the 760 GPU drivers clashing with remnants of the onboard GPU driver for all I know. I think turning off hardware acceleration cures it, but as it was random not sure yet.

Hopi, I'm with you on that. I'm no Microsoft/Windows 10 hater, but I'm in the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" camp. Constant upgrading, just because you can, is often just another way to avoid doing the work you want/need to do. I have no beef (perhaps I should say soy, since I'm a vegetarian) with upgrading per se; some folks just have to have the latest, and that's fine. and I have no doubt that W10, properly configured, is probably better than W7. but how much, and is it worth the potential headaches? At some point in time, we all have to upgrade, but why do it just because Microsoft is enticing you with a "free" upgrade? Let the eager beavers do it, and learn from their mistakes (like telemetry, forced updates, driver problems, etc). Update when YOU want to, not when THEY say you have to.

Hmmmm ... can try uninstalling 3D & Experience. These cards (560Ti, 660, 760) have remained in-place for years now with no issues. Kinda strange that i7/760 system developed the issue after recent Win Update and i5/560Ti did not.
Also... strong note ... ALL other software remains fully functional including Reaper v5.40, and other NI software___ Massive, Absynth5, Battery4, load instantly. Other VSTi as well .... Omnisphere2, u-he-Repro-1, Iris2, IvoryII, others .......

Owing to my temporary use of onboard GPU I may also have missed those troublesome drivers?

you're kidding! You couldn't get that shade by mousing through the swatch panels? Afaik you can hit everything from R to V and all stops between.
Unless you can see outside the visible spectrum, you must be a Vogon
Just had a thought. I'm on tablet in hospital so don't have Win in front of me. Surely you can still mouse across the colour selected and not just use the slide shown in ED's piccy????

Sounds perfect for stable music production, especially if you run a studio.
Ya, I'm looooving it (compared to normal Windows. I still wish it were Linux).

That links says after 90 days you'll get a nag screen, but I think for Windows Enterprise that may not be true. I've heard it shuts down after 90 days.

It would be fantastic if a music-computers retailer were able to somehow sell computers with a Windows E LTSB license, but not sure how that would work exactly. I know someone who's planning to build a custom music-machine (tiny powerful with passive cooling) and it would be perfect to ship with with LTSB if that were feasible.

@Ed. Why do you use TotalCommander? Do you install Explorer? Do you use a different D.E.? I also hate white-screens on my computer btw... when I alt-tab and get a giant white-page (including score-view)... it burns. Haha.

You don't install Explorer, it comes with Windows.

I use Total Commander because it's what I am used to. It's a direct descendant from the old venerable Norton Commander back in DOS days, which was what I also used, so you see... it's how I operate.

Since new MS CEO questioned Bill Gates' strategic plan(s) ... perhaps he may be considering special Win10 versions for a few truly salient application areas ??

DAW(s)/music production could be one; Gaming surely another .... No secret for decades, groups of Users prefer to shed bloat to optimize for their usage. With large groupings, there should be sufficient related revenues to make it work ?

Windows 10 Pro DAW !! Has a nice ring ...

I would actually pay a bit more for a stripped version like that. Still hoping Linux will provide healthy, serious competition in the future.

Problem is I imagine that Microsoft have already weighed up the pros and cons on this one, and already decided we are worth way more than any realistic entry fee. Therefore it would take serious competition to change their business strategy. Right now they don't need to.

Just to drop my two cents on Win 10 Pro.

I've had it on two separate music making and sound design machines for about a year now. One is a laptop that is constantly connected to the internet, I do a lot of other stuff on it as well and one is a powerful desktop (Overclocked 6800k/GTX960) that is just for music and sound design so it rarely needs to be online. I have done a lot of group policy editing to turn off unnecessary features and other crap. Both only update when I let them.

I just installed Creators Update on the desktop yesterday and the only annoying bit was when Windows asked whether I would like to try Edge, obviously not. Although for some reason I had to manually update the machine as the "Check for updates" method failed to install Creators Update for some reason, which was also a little annoying.

I am surprised to have had zero problems on the desktop and only minor problems on the laptop, both of which were due to my heavy handed group policy editing.

Microsoft are a very annoying company, mostly due to them pushing unwanted and crappy features on their customers, and if Reaper and Ableton Live, all of my most needed plugins and RME drivers ran on Linux I would instantly switch, but as it stands I am pleased with Win 10 Pro. I will probably use it for years to come for work and pleasure.

Also, the Apple ecosystem is just not my thing, I have tried. It also seems to be getting worse and worse.
