Licecap?
Headgear to prevent nitpicking?
Sorry for the bad pun, but what is it? Search turned up nothing.

Lice is a library of Cockos to draw stuff on screen I think. It'll just be a screencapture or video capture program, much like VirtualDub I presume.

You can do:
licecap.exe -e file.lcf
then do stuff, then come back, hit ctrl+c.
then try inserting file.lcf into a reaper project (with 3.52pre1+) and open the video window
or use licecap.exe -d file.lcf file.gif

does this work on win 7 64bit (reaper 32bit) or is it 32bit only?
And do you mean from a command prompt?

wow.. screenvids made easy!
anyway to up the frame rate, reduce screen size etc. i guess it is alpha/beta so it will no doubt soon.
you are clever chaps.
edit-
hmm i got it to work once, then it wouldn't... ( now it does.. carry on.)

Nevermind got it to start capturing, opened a project in reaper and then my cursor disappeared then everything froze guess it was trying to capture all 6 of my monitors! hopefully when the gui is done it will allow an area to be selected lol. Thanks a lot for this though. It's going to make my teaching much better.
.
In fact i'm aiming for next year to get us to switch to reaper instead of logic as it's not fair on the students who mostly have pc's already and have to go out and buy a mac to keep up with the work. (not got a problem with macs but with reaper you can choose both)

Nice, this will prove useful for quick helper animation snippets and bug reports. Hope we'll be able to start capturing from within Reaper?

question:
what will playback these files bar reaper?
will the forum accept them for quick vids?
just tested exporting a capture to .mov etc. thats all fine (after upping the playrate for 'pace' - pretty handy!)
this then makes me think a reaper render option, to render just video (without audio obviously) to *animated gif* would be particularly useful since that is forum friendly and small filesize.
(the gif option mr Justin gave, was a single frame grab, unless i messed up.)
this would save having to render a capture out to a format that a 3rd party converter utility would accept to get a anim' gif.
am sure it'll be super cool either way.

The current licecap export to (licecap -d source.lcf target.gif) should give an animated gif.

In-SYNC video capture?
ok, how tired AM I? So, big wish on the way to becoming reality?
IE. hook camcorder via firewire into PC, start REAPER, do whatever I still don't know, with Licecap.exe and I can have LIVE video recorded in sync with REAPER tracks.
Basically what I do now i time consuming. Running two programs at once. WinDV to grab the LIVE video feed and REAPER to record the audio. Then I have to align the video after an import.
So, soon-ish we may, for example: point a firewire connected camcorder at the band jamming. Hit record in REAPER and record IN-SYNC video/audio?
actually happy to be able to just use REAPER and the CLI licecap.exe, then import video sperately. Anything all REAPER-esque works for me.

LiceCap is now updated to LiceCap_gui No command prompt anymore, resizeable, pause and stop buttons and a save as dialog. The framerate is still quite low.
I think the main purpose will be to more easily create these helpful animations people are posting in this forum.
I know we can capture directly to *.gif, but I see the need to at least trim the ends a bit, and I like to add a few black frames (or any other reasonable hint) to the gif-ani, so people can tell where the loop starts when watching it in the forum (this is often a problem when trying to understand what happens).
What I would like to do is:
open the lcf in Reaper,
trim the ends,
create a time selection a bit wider than the lcf item and
render the timeselection to a *.gif ani (or to *.lcf and then convert, so the forum can display it).
That should do the trick very neatly .
I very much appreciate the whole LiceCap effort, will help the forum and devs by providing better help descriptions and bug reports.
Another thought: It would maybe also be nifty if LiceCap could save a screenshot as *.png?

The frame rate is capped at 5 fps by default (to keep licecap from eating all your CPU). You can enter a higher value at the bottom left.

Woah, neat! Seems like I don't need Camtasia anymore.
Well, for adding balloon tips, though. Unless JCS plan on introducing that as well at some point?

looking neat indeed,
agree with gofers suggestion, though you can help indicate the end of a 'vid' by using the pause button then moving the licecap window over to a blank bit of space and unpause it for a second or two.
EDIT- non looping example removed - all good now thanku

Just tried the lice cap gui version and it's flipping great we can just import the lice file or gif (which is best for which?) and then overlay it with dialogue and then export again.
Is there a way to get a bigger storage amount on the reaper forum or should I be using the stash and linking from there?
and your right, it doesn't loop here either

It is pc only at the moment and it allows you to open it (get it from the lol site you get reaper pres from) and set a window size and then capture what's in the window in gif or lice format. Once captured you can then drag it back into reaper to add commentary and then export it or you can just upload straight to the forum.
It's main use is really for bug reporting and helping new guys.

The licecapgui.exe looks great. What is the licecap(non gui).exe file? Does this work with Reaper? No gui but the file is bigger, humm.

thanks for fixes -
to anyone that hasn't spotted the opportunity, I would add that the fact you can pause recording and 'cut' to different areas, means that that could be item notes or text open on another screen
so you can quite easily include text at different points if need be, silent movie style.
-
one FR that would be handy is a clock counter of both total recording duration and time since last 'unpause' to help keep track of things...
that would be cool.
i can see the verb to 'licecap' becoming common around 'ere... very handy app.

What an awesome little tool!
Does this have any specific higher purpose with Reaper? I see it's great for making tutorials and examples.
Hey, even a user guide with animated examples in the future.

I've just tried the updated GUI version, and it's (already) a really great tool!
Will this become publicly available? If so, what kind of license will it get? I'm sure my company could make good use of this tool.

A new LiceCap is up on LOL
Added is the possibility to have a title screen at the start of the animation. YAY!
It's right now a versatile tool to quick-create nice simple animations to fill up the forum with .
Plus I can't wait for the plenty tutorial vids that hopefully will rain on us in the future
Time to hit CTRL+ALT+H, which I still have assigned to "Dev: Auto-hug JCS". Can you feel it?

I remember there being a feature in one of the recent pres with "support for licecap", Does that mean we can get to it somehow from within reaper? Just confused by what it means? it seems licecap (gui atleast) is independent right?

love the old school font - and thanks for the duration counter too btw! is nice to be heard - (no-one listens to me in real life.. boo hoo. hah)
FRII - be nice to have option to save/output a vid in both gif and licecap format simultaneously,
in case you do a gif that you then wish was in licecap format (to import into reaper to make a audio/visual vid and vice versa.)
just for options really.
groovy
