I've finally solved another problem - Now you can have lightning-fast boot times with a frugal HDD install:
- Go to C:\Boot\ from Windows XP (or Puppy) and edit the 'menu.lst' file.
Replace 'pmedia=idehd' with 'pmedia=atahd'
- Change the timeout value from '10' to '0'
and that's it Reboot and see the difference.

You can use Puppy's [still buggy] 'PFind' utility for that.

True - a bit dissapointed I am though.
Still, this makes up for it>
!True Pianos is now working with no noticeable latency in Reaper and Xt2!
I just wish this puppzy would change my keyboard to DE / says it has but it hasn|t!

That should be fixed in 4.2 (final)
(the keyboard wizard is still a work-in-progress)
RC3 is nice, but there are still a ton of bugs to squash.

(it's a really small package that doesn't do any harm to your system)

Is there a download of 4.2 anywhere, I see you talking about it like there is but I couldn't find one anywhere.

Just out of interest I installed Puppy 4.1 on an SD card. I couldn't really believe how fast it boots (15 seconds or something). Couldn't establish a wireless connection though since it doesn't let you access hidden networks... any idea how to achieve this?
If 4.2 shows decent real-time performance on dual-core CPUs I'll propably jump ship and ditch Ubuntu (again).

It's still a (buggy) beta.Really nice and much better than 4.1.2,but there are a few nasty bugs blocking the final release.
One of those bugs is pretty serious (the package manager is broken),so it's better to wait for the final release.

- Did you rename the .gz archives to .pet before installing?
- Are you using Puppy 4.1.2 ? (4.2 RC3 has serious bugs, one of them being the exact same problem you're experiencing)

RC4 is coming soon...we're working on it
(screenshot from the buggy RC3)
4.2 is going to be a *big* improvement over 4.1.2.
(4.1.2 feels like Win98SE, while 4.2 is more like Windows 7)
The speed (and size) is going to be the same - even with the desktop bling, gadgets, extra features and the new/updated apps.

Puppy started out looking like Win9x,then went with the XP look (with the optional EZPup addon and some familiar looking IceWM themes). Now we're going for that Vista look out of the box without the sluggish Vista feel. It's about making the better Linux environment seem as easy and familiar as possible.

Hi Synth, I installed the extra dependencies package, but still no luck getting jack working with the phonic firewire mixer. I think this is the issue:
could not open driver .so '/usr/lib/jack/jack_firewire.so': /usr/lib/libglibmm-2.4.so.1: undefined symbol: g_checksum_update
The libglibmm-2.4.so.1 was a dependency that was listed as missing in the ffado install- could that be the issue?
EDIT: i found the library file and downloaded it to /usr/lib but that didn't seem to do anything. Do I need to link them somehow? I forget how to do that but I will check now.
EDIT 2: I made a symbolic link between usr/lib/jack/jack_firewire.so and /usr/lib/libglibmm-2.4.so.1, now Jack posts this:
could not open driver .so '/usr/lib/jack/jack_firewire.so': /usr/lib/libglibmm-2.4.so.1: file too short
But still no firewire mixer...

Here's the first screenshot of Puppy Studio (still based on 4.12 with lots of tweaks and updates)
This is just an early preview build. The alpha builds will use 4.2 as the base. The final version will be Woof-based (5.x).

Well actually, for me this IS of some interest. as much as I've found puppy to have things in weird places (I don't mean the union/aufs based stuff) ...
Interesting as I keep wine WAY away from my day to day Linux system (due to the scores of links it puts everywhere when running other linux packages that see it and em-bed with it...heheha ([long one that] which makes backs scary or worse, personally)
Puppy is a huge effort and great if one want to run on a machine anywhere, though for having a USB external drive/stick for MOST or just personal systems...a more stock build with just aufs/squashfs etc. would be more likeable for me.
I find learning puppy confuses greatly what I have learned intensively this past year about a slim linux system. That said... It's likely just the gaps in my knowledge and I'm sure gonna keep puppy as 'my other distro'..
READ: many thanks for the lead on the new puppy alpha....cool!!!
AAAAAND!.... looks like a cool effort.... appreciated!!
JACK2 rocks... actually I've found the beta or whatever jack2 is at is the ONLY way I could get it running as root user .. due to /dev/shm fstab et.al. weirdness. yep, run as reg. user less issues.
one thing easy to miss if using the gui qjackctl is that on the right clicking on the little > things shows the other ins and outputs. AND, with jack if one give it too much leeway as in 4 seconds instead or 1 second, for example, it won't start... for me. So, try setting it to a shorter time ms. etc. if having probs.
ALSO, on the rather sparse jack site in the FAQ I think there's TWO ways to run jack 1.x it describes.... the /dev/shm way is the harder (perhaps better dunno)
Then there's compiling jack as well..
I guess what I've realized is that KNOWING how to do nix stuff at a reasonable [RELENTLESS!! hehehe] saves a lot of time. makes a lot of sense and that's why I will stay on with learning puppy.
oh, REAPER ROCKS EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
UPDATE COMMENT: PUPPY 4.2 is really working well for me. VERY good to study how it's done with. Impressed and motivated to get over my 'afraid of that puppy'

WIRELESS
If. like me you're unluck enough to have a linksys broadcom card there may be issues with puppy and wireless. I am amazed at how they cram so many drivers in there. You have to TEST and then LOAD the module if it doesn't discover for you. if you're using wpa2 or wep or whatever you have to create / save and then USE the profile... last move is usually to use dhcpcd to get a lease. Certainly an amazing effort. Just tried the 4.2rc4. yep, lots of weirds though still, very very cool.

Post-RC4 screenshots:
- Windows with rounded corners
- widgets load (and run) 2-3x faster
- 90% of the bugs are squashed
- Puppy is getting popular: 8th place on DistroWatch

Oh dear,
for the first one I got a message about not unpacking to the right directory - and that I should clean up manually.
The second one links to a .html page - and that produces a .gz again.
After renaming to pet it did install but I'm not sure if its dependant on the other one.
What do these two do synth ?

Download the files with the default browser included in Puppy (the one that you start by clicking the 'browse' icon).
It should save the files correctly (as .PET packages).
Save them to /tmp and install from there.
They're .so (.dll for you Windows users ) files needed by some apps to function correctly
Install the packages and see if it works. If not,I'll post another one.
Puppy 4.1.2 is a bit old,so it needs some updating. 4.2 will have most of the stuff updated, but not all. The Studio variant will have everything up to date

- unofficial repositories (add your own)
- auto update
- improved auto dependency checker & downloader
- verbose package descriptions
- install multiple packages upon a single request
- package stripping (trim the fat option)

- better commandline installation ala 'apt-get'
- new database format

So, when I unplugged the mixer I got the same message, which I think means the machine and the mixer are not seeing each other. The firewire light on the mixer goes on when I plug in the cable to my computer, so it is probably not a hardware issue (and on windows this works fine, so I know my firewire card works, but it's on windows, which I like to see as little as possible. Plus, I did get this working on ubuntu, so I knwo the machine works). So, could it be a problem with the raw1394 or something like that? I know on ubuntu I had to set raw1394 to the same group that I belong to, is there an equivalent issue on puppy? My firepod usually works well with linux but right now that is not at my house so I can't test it until Saturday. However, as I said this mixer did work with ffado on my ubuntu setup (which has been erased of course :-( ). So anyway, I think we are very very close now, any ideas?

Puppy Studio pre-alpha running a native Linux app with realtime JACK. I've applied some tweaks / optimizations and here's the result:
My single core test machine can handle real-time audio streaming with latencies as low as 0.4 ms without Xruns (32bit/96kHz)
Do we really need a realtime kernel? I don't think so. RT kernels are unstable/flaky. A native Linux build of Rpr will fly on Puppy Studio
