Default question about WRITING AUTOMATION DATA

When writing automation in Latch/Touch/Write modes, is there a way to set it so that the value of any given adjusted parameter, when I hit stop, is set for the rest of the track, instead of returning to the level prior to writing the data?

Let's try and explain that again. Say my reverb send is at -inf to begin with. I do some recording in Latch mode, during which I raise the reverb send to -5. Now when I press stop, the send level after the stop point remains at -inf. I would like it to remain at -5 for the rest of the project, or at least until the next automation point of any subsequent automation data already written on that track.

does that make sense??

Not sure it does, but is anyway only a matter of grabbing and moving the last point, no?

That sounds like automation "fill" mode, which I don't think Reaper has.

Airon can speak to that in more detail but (generally speaking) they fil to end, fill loop, range, etc, etc, carying the "punch out" level up to a certain point doen the timeline.

Sure, but say you've got 10 automation tracks to adjust, suddenly that becomes a workflow-killing chore....

I note that there are actions for writing current values from cursor to end/start/time sel - so that's close enough I guess

Yeah I see what you mean. Ought to be an option in automations.

Scroll down to "Fill Modes" in the link below. It's automation functions that every major DAW should have... dare I say it out loud... even before VCA's. Again, Airon can fill in the real world tid-bits, why and when it's useful.

The one thing you can't do with "write" is write to the left, but fill does it both ways.

In a word, YES, but you have to know how.

Reaper in its current state has three automation fill commands, and one of them is
Automation: Write current values from cursor to end of project
The rules are :
  • It requires a writing automation mode to be active, which are Touch, Latch or WRITE

  • The command will cause data to be written to all active and armed parameters on all tracks that have a writing automation mode active, so if you want to selective writes to the end, get ready to get your checkbox groove on in the envelope window.

How to do it "On Stop"
Make a two-action macro.

One to trigger that action mentioned above, and the second to stop transport.

Keep those limitations in mind.

Practice with visible envelopes to know exactly what Reaper does. I'm telling you this because practical automation was not on Cockos' agenda for a looong time. There might be surprises, so if there are any left, find them in a practice session.

Please note that the Modern Automation Recording request linked to below fixes EVERYTHING. With that you could write selectively only to the stuff or plugins or tracks you've touched when the transport stops. It's one of the many things the features of that request would facilitate.
