Which Headphones Do You Use ???
Having a small apt studio we'll need to use headphones to track and mix down. I'm looking at the Audio-Technica ATH-M50 cans as well as others in it's price range.
Appreciate any recommendations, thoughts or opinions.
Thanks...

I avoid mixing on cans whenever I can. However, I do check mixes on Sennheiser HD600's. Have them for very long time and FWIW, I could even do a couple of mixes on them. But, I really have problems wearing cans for longer periods of time, don't matter how good and even comfortable they are, so, mixing on cans was really never an option for me.

For mixing I am using a AKG 271 MKII headphone together with a focusrite vrm-box. Very usefull combi for mixing at home or in hotels. For me it works.
For recording, the headphone brand is not so important. It is important to have a closed one.

Speaking of closed, why settle for a one sized fits all device with 19th century coiled cables, etc.?
Out ears are all unique, software in high security areas can identify people by earlobes, everyone has their own relative 4k notch, so why not get an audiogram, find your weakness and strength, then have 6 way drivers made for you specifically.
JHAudio Pro, are the best 3 way stereo drivers out there.
Take a dump while mixing, get your mail, ignore the wife and kids.
It's what they use on the big jobs. Best thing is you can get a plug in designed to make presets for which ever set of near fields or mid fileds tyou are using.

I wandered in to the gear shop with a playback device and listened to music I know very well to pick the headphones I wanted.
For me I use two, one set that's open and one that's closed off(hard).
Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro (open)
Sennheiser HD-25 (closed for field recording)
I just picked what sounded great and felt good after longer use.

I also have the M50 and love them.
But then again, I have no comparison as these are my first and only "pro" headphones so far.

Beyerdynamic DT880s here. Priced well for what they offer, comfortable, detailed. I read up a fair amount before buying ad I had nowhere close to try them out. I am not disappointed.
I read a few gripes about lack of bass. Not sure what people are/were expecting. good bass response from what I can hear. Not hyped to death. That said, I got the 250 ohm versions and plug them into a Focusrite 18i20. Plenty loud but I still want to get a decent headphone amp for them. I think they could benefit from more headroom. But if I never do, I won't complain.

They are expecting hyped oompf, even if they would not realize it.
I have a pair of AKG K240DFs. Most neutral and unhyped headphones I've ever used and sure enough, they've got complaints about the lack of bass. I wouldn't make definitive evaluation of low end with only these either, but the sonic details are delicate. Would I be looking for a new pair, I'd most probably go for Beyerdynamic DT880 Pros. Closed ones would be a harder decision for me, haven't tried or used ones in 15 years I think.

I also was recently shopping for headphones. I went to several stores and listened to tracks from different genres. I was looking for headphones in the 150 Euro range. The Sennheisser, Audio Technica and Beyerdynamic ones for that price sounded too HiFi to me and I ended up with the AKG 271 MK2. Still like them a lot.

I got the Audio-Technica ATH-M50 ones and I love them so much. Wearing them now. Pretty clear/flat/comfy for my huge head. I'm not an expert on headphones though; I pretty much just researched the ones with the best ratings/comments in my price range on amazon lol

A pair of 240s I bought in Nashvegas in the eighties.
And a pair of Sennheiser 650s I bought used recently.
Neither of these are exciting, they just do the job.
Also have assorted DF140s and elderly Sonys for tracking.
Not that I often have anyone in here tracking other than me these days....

Beyerdynamic DT880 pro.
Very nice sounding. Bass goes down low while not covering the rest.

The AudioTechnica ATH-M50s are very nice. I've been using them for several months, and they translate well to a pair of large ADAM monitors I use. Their low end (in the 40-80 range) is a bit hyped for my taste, but I think that's inherent in the closed design; all closed headphones sound that way to me.
It's difficult to recommend any pair of headphones as a sole reference for mixing, but in your situation it will be a matter of comparing: playing your mixes in different known environments, and learning to interpret what you're getting from the M50s in light of that.
If you like the M50s, also listen to the Sony MDR-7506 headphones, if you haven't.

I know the situation well, where cans are your only option at that moment. The most true mix I've gotten from a moderately priced set of phones is from the KRK 8400's. I broke them in for 24-48 hrs with some bass focused music, and I couldn't be happier for $150.

HD 280 PRO
I have/had 9 different headphones, the one I use for most applications recently (tracking and mixing) are HD 280 PRO / Sennheiser - if you want alround headphones check Sennheiser - unbelievable good price, too.///

I'm mostly using Beyerdynamic DT770 Pros. They are great headphones in my opinion; nice detailed sound, wonderful bass, etc. They are comfortable enough to worn for many hours if needed.

My vote goes to ...
I've heard great things about pretty much all the headphones already mentioned in this thread. My vote however goes to the Shure SRH-840's. No hyped frequencies, very neutral sounding, and very comfortable over long periods of listening. Also ... pretty great isolation for tracking as well. Hope this is in some way helpful! :-)

I've had the same pair of Sennheiser HD25-1's for over 10 years now and it's the best investment I've ever made. Now I've had to buy new pads for them, but I use them almost every day in that period so they are very reliable.
Now they weren't cheap, but I went through the blister pack off the shelf cans for years and at about $50-75 a pop I'd get maybe two years out of them at best and they sounded pretty lousy. You prorate that cost and figure that by buying something that is higher quality I have saved literally hundreds of dollars over that time and have had a much better experience in the process.

Nothing to laugh at there! They run rings around cans four times the price. They have to be one of the most underrated products on the market.
I regularly ditch my more expensive headphones and go back to them.
Plus, they are so comfortable --- your ears don't get hot after hours of use.

I have The ATH M-50's as well as AKG K271s
The M50's are great for tracking but i wouldn't use them for mixing, i find them too bass heavy.
I wouldn't like to mix just with the K271's either but i'd choose those over the M-50's for sure.
My 2c but as always ymmv
cheers

Sony 7506's out on the floor -- hyped mids which is GREAT for tracking.
ATH-M50's at the desk -- much more neutral, but bass hyped like most closed back.
Shure SRH 440's are nice for the price too.

After my Sennheisers from the 90's fell apart, I got a pair Monoprice 8323 (two pairs, actually). They got a good review in Tape OP:

AKG's K701 are my main headphones, they are really nice and detailed, but if I mix with them only I tend to get little too much low end. But of course this isn't problem when I use monitors too.
I also have Koss Porta Pro for my family laptop and they are nice headphones for referencing and for youtube and such.

I have ATH-M50 and DT880 PRO.
I'm much more used to the ATH-M50, so maybe that's why i still prefer them over the beyers. I can get a mix 95% right on them, but it took quite some time learning them by always checking stuff on other systems.
Some say the ATH-M50 are too bassy, for my liking the DT880 PRO have too less bass. I can't mix on them wihout inserting a bass boost eq in the monitoring chain, but that's probably also because I'm so used to the ATH-M50.
As always it depends on your listening preferences and the kind of music you make.
ATH-M50 are definitely one of the best in their price range

I've tried/used many of the units mentioned on this page.
Most comfortable/clearest sound for tracking: Shure SRH-840
Runner-up: KRK KNS-8400
Lower budget: Shure SRH-440
I've got some of the others mentioned, ATH-M50,HD-280,way too uncomfortable to wear for long periods (for me)

AKG K 501's my ears are pretty shot but they just sound right to me. Although I have never compared them to anything else or indeed had the urge to buy anything else.
