Default Around $700 pc build

Hi,

Been through a ton of reading.....
Im ready to replace my core2 duo xp machine I built years ago. A couple of questions.
Has well or sky lake i7?

Thunderbolt...I'm currently using a motu pcie interface, but for future compatibility? I usually get about ten years out a my computers.

My last build had a Intel extreme mb. Very reliable and full featured. Any preferences at this price point? I have a gtx 660 video card...fly some flight sims.....

I use reaper daily with drum romplers and assorted vstis and vsts.

And I need ps2 connectors for keyboard and mouse.

Thanks for any help. Oh I'm thinking mid tower atx, but am open to any new formats that would be in this price point and are somewhat expandable.

1. PS2????!!!! Mouse & Keyboard are cheap & usb a much better alternative.

Assuming it has a decent power supply, you would be better off keeping the case & psu rather than recycling anything like mouse, etc.

FWIW I am still on a PCI interface (REM) let alone pci-e and a i7 4770, so thunderbolt really doesnt have to feature to highly in your decision making.
The rest of the decision I would be making around two items.

cpu and how good a display you need. And of course a MOBO with enough holes for stuff that you need.

I stayed on the onboard gfx for a long time till I went for 2 higher resolution ISP panels, when I installed an inexpensive fanless GFX card.

Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks ivansc for your response. The ps2 thing is for my 4 computer key/mouse/display switcher. Running sound diver universal editor/librarian for all my midi hardeware on my old os9 Mac. And I'm intergrating my xp machine in a different role than daw ....at least for the time being. And the sims I fly need some juice.:-)

Was wondering if saving a cpl$ on haswell would be a good idea.

Thanks for the input...

Guido

Well my haswell chip still runs pretty good. And I suspect it eats your current box for lunch, big time.
Alld epends on how up to date and fast you want to be.
Bear in mind that up to date adds $$ as does fast.
If you want to stay around $700 I would go Haswell IF it saves a significant amount over a more recent chip and mobo.
Bear in mind the newer you go the less you have in the way of legacy soundcard options.
