Default Waveforms display peaks that do not exist at borders

Here I have an item which was imported from a selection in the media explorer. When I am zoomed out I see that there is a spike at the end of the file:

But when I zoom in I see that there is no such spike:

I have encountered this frequently when I slice an intro of a song right before drums or a louder part kicks in. The louder part still shows up even though it is not in the file.

It confuses me and I have to zoom in to check that I actually sliced it right.

I suppose this is due to Reaper using a peak file or part of one that was generated before the cut?

long reported bug, but hopefully frequent reports will make devs
look into the issue.

Sorry! This is incorrect. Loop section of item source is checked.

You meant "loop item source", right? Neither "loop item source" nor "loop section of item source" fixes it.

When I glue the item, the spike disappears. Sorry for the confusion. Somehow I always find a way to mess up a bug report.

It's one of those issues where it's not easy to reproduce exactly,
but as far as I remember it 'sometimes' happens on items that
have been split, and it just shows on certain zoom level, so not
even easy to spot... :/

Yes, I should have mentioned it does not always show, on at certain levels of horizontal zoom.

BTW, that rar comes back as corrupted...

Edit:

however, I have duplicated this -- the problem:

When it is using a cached map of the peaks, if there is some value that starts within the resolution of the mipmap used after the end of the item, there's no way to know whether that peak is visible. So in theory we'd have to hit the higher resolution map, or possibly even hit the media to get enough precision.. which could have some bad performance implications... we'll investigate this some , but for now this probably needs to be tagged as "live with it (for now)".

I also get similar bugs with waveforms.

Gotta give this a bump.

I'm currently editing ("de-peaking") audio items and it's a bit confusing having a peak present / not present with the change of zoom level.

Yea, and it´s a shame, to be honest. 7 years, no fix for a super-confusing problem!! They say they will keep the bug like it is because of UI performance. Really? I would prefer to work (and see things) ACCURATELY instead, in the end that´s what audio-editing is all about. What a joke Reaper sometimes is, can´t be taken serious that they consider this to be something to "live with" :-(
